I am very new here to the point that I don't even know how to post a new question.. Maybe I'll get help this way? My 3yr old cat has megacolon and after another (year apart) emergency trip he is home now since 5:30 pm yesterday. He had some enemas and now he is having diahrea and it is a huge mess to clean. Is this normal? I don't remember it being this bad the first time. He won't let me near his bum which is understandable but everywhere He lies or sits leaves poop imprints and I even tried washing his bum with warm water and he did not like that but I had no choice. I have 2 other cats and home alone as my husband is on the road and so overwhelmed. I have been up since 3 cleaning poop. Being that he went in on a Sunday and today being a holiday he was in and out and did the recovery at home. Is that the problem too? I forgot to ask them for something for the pain and discomfort.. They usually give metcam.. I am so exhausted and just don't know what to do? I'll give the emergency vet a call in the later am and ask for something? Like I said I am new here too so apologies for being in the wrong place if I am.

Maybe this website will help you? Megacolon cats really need to be on a bio appropriate diet with the right types of fiber. If you're using laxatives too much or too often you'll just go between constipation and diarrhea.

It would help if we knew what type of food your cat is eating and what meds he is on..

I know the dribbling is horrible. What helped a bit, was buying some puppy pads. I also covered things with towels and sheets.. I have never used so much bleach in my life.. and Nature's Miracle.. gloves are a necessity.. as is baby wipes.

Can you isolate your kitty to one room with a couple litter boxes? or just the bathroom? My guy cannot tolerate being in a closed room.

Diarrhea after an enema is not unordinary. I always try to relate my baby's treatments with myself going through them. If you were giving him some laxatives or stool softeners before the enema, well, associate it with a dam bursting... that is what is happening now.

I do not think anyone can advise you as to how long this will last.

You have been very fortunate with going a year without an enema.. that is great. My guy had 5 between Dec and the end of January.

Working with your vet for the appropriate food, fiber or fiber less food, and the appropriate meds is very important. I found out a lot of this is trial and error.. and I am still erring.  It is maddening... Communication between you and your vet is utmost..

I do not know what else to say, except the IBD Kitties on Facebook is a great group of people.. there is also a MegaColon Forum on Yahoo.. You could try those out for more information..

wishing you the best of luck... please remember to breathe.. and know there are people here for you...

((hugs))

Thank you so much for the replies guys! I guess I should have been more specific but between being up all night cleaning, I have been sick with worry! Thank you Artiemom! That really made me feel better. A little background.. He was diagnosed in '15 after that diagnosis and enema, he was given Cisapride and lactolose.. We ended up putting him on our own wet food diet from the pet store with great healthy ingredients. He was also on Lactolose but that stuff did not work well with him. He seemed to be doing very good and even lost 3kg's but the vet wants him down more. Before he went in yesterday afternoon, he had not pooped for 5 days and was complaining when he strained that he would pee he was straining so hard.. The vet confirmed in the xray that all is well with the exception of his severe constipation. After going to the vet on Saturday for restoralax by Sunday he was not looking any better and in agony.. And yes he had a quarter tsp restoralax that morning! I got him in around 2 and he was home by 5:20 last eve.. I think that is what was the hard part.. Usually he is there for a portion of the post recovery but he did all that here! I have done nothing but laundry
.. Switching towels over. He is confined to the bathroom with a litter box (i have 2 other fur babies so have an extra box) After going to the vet this am for something to relieve his discomfort he gave me Metacam which worked really good. Within an hour he was pawing to come out and I do for a small period because his leaky bum just cant allow him out here right now.. The good news is he is getting less dripping and more solid. He won't let me near his bum and I'm sure it's because he is so tender. I just felt alone and thought something was terribly wrong especially with his front leg had a horrible swelling and after yet ANOTHER call to the vet he assured me it was from where they put the fluids and other liquids and that is what caused the swelling and also helps keeping him hydrated .. The first time he recovered at the vet and I was not prepared for the mess awaiting but so thankful for the responses and feeling less alone. I'm sorry your baby had so many in such a short time. I am about to go check on my boy and continue to dab a warm face cloth as much as he will let me.
Oh and for the diet.. We switched him last week to a vet gastrointestinal food but next week he is going on a prescription metabolic diet as the vet said he needs to loose at least 4kg's more and we are ready to do what we can. Feeding separate will be easy, as we started doing that when we first switched him over. Thank you so much for.taking time to respond to this hypersensitive furbaby mama.

My poor Pipi.. His bum won't stop leaking :( I guess it has only been since Sunday. Poor guy. What is the longest it has taken for a kitty to stop having dribbles? Its been since Sunday 5pm, just wanting to know if it will get better. I. Sure it will, just at the moment does not feel that way.

I would think that the dribbles should be slowing down by now.. perhaps he is full of gas so the dribbles come out when he expels the gas???

Is he on any laxatives, right now? perhaps you can decrease the dose, just until you see the beginning of a formed stool and then start up the regular dose again...  just thoughts..

We had a cat with mega colon. Cisapride is what she took. She never had an enema. If she went one day without pooping she would be fed one teaspoon mineral oil, plain, on a saucer. It lubricated the stool. Olive oil is absorbed into the gut. Has to be mineral oil. Wet food diet, low in fiber. We would mix some water into her wet food, and that have her more fluids. We were able to stabilize her this way. Hope that helps. Sorry for your dilemma.

you have to be careful with mineral oil.. it prevents the nutrients' the digested food, from being absorbed into the body..

That happens to humans also. This is why it is not prescribed. It is used as a hand me down for centuries--before they knew better.

Besides: This cat does not need any more laxative help, at this point.

Too be honest, I am not too sure about the gas part, although the do smell VERY bad.. I am too scared to put him on restoralax as I agree with you, he so evidently does not need anymore laxatives! He is on his Cisapride, which we can't stop. The Cisapride I have found exasperates it, which I am assuming is due to helping the colon active. We went back to the vet this am and he is on a metabolic diet they are trying him on as well as Fortiflora which he started this evening (half a packet x2 a day) We thought he was doing better today but when I can home this evening and walked through the door he jumped off the couch and drip, drip, drip.. He seems to do okay and then he has moments where he looks ill and his ears vet really hot. The vet said if he is not better by after the weekend to bring him back in. I Sure hope that is not the case, it does seem to get better and no where as bad as the first 2 days, but still bothersome that it is Thursday evening and seems to an still and issue. I pray this gets better. Thank you for the replies and advice. I am just hyperemotional during this peeiod, as I am sure some would understand.

Oh sweetie, I know exactly what you are going through. I had towels, old sheets, and was constantly wiping up spots from the laminate floor and my rugs.I had an old sheet covering my bed quilt.  I Think the last thing that broke me was when, I woke up to find a big puddle of diarrhea on the cover sheet that went through to the quilt.

I was constantly washing linens.. using so much bleach, clorox wipes for the floor, Natures Miracle, and Baby Wipes for his bum.

I understand completely.. so many meltdowns, feelings of exhaustion.

FWIW:  Are you taking you baby to a specialist or is your regular vet handling things?I forget if you mentioned that..

One thing you may have to keep an eye on is dehydration and weight loss due to the nutrients not being able to get absorbed. The dehydration you can easily check yourself.. the gums are tacky when dehydrated. I mention this because of all the diarrhea. And is he eating ok?

I use Proviable daily~~ an entire capsule mixed in food..  I think that Forti-Flora is an ok probiotic, but not the best. It contains animal digest..

His ears are probably hot because he does not feel well... perhaps not quite running a temp.. but it is something to bring up to your vet..

The diarrhea is really going on for a long time after the enema.. unless you really loaded him up with a ton of laxatives before the enema.

Wishing you the best of luck.. we are all here for you.. ((HUGS))

**Poop pic attached** Thank you so much Artiesmom, it sure is easy to feel alone in this, but.. Someone's happy today! Also, I am proud to report that yesterday afternoon we had our first resemblance of a solid poop and being a nugget type constipator it was nice to see a bit of length! I never thought I would be excited over poop! It was on the carpet to start but he finished in his litter box poor guy! And, we had our first night poop free! He came on to the bed and was kneading away! He is an extra happy boy today! I burst into tears I'm so happy.. It was a long time to heal but this mama is very happy!

I am so thankful for the support on this site and I am glad your boy is doing good too Artiemom! My Pipi says hi!
I hope I get many more years with all 3 my babies.. Thought I'd share some pics, the poop one was just me being happy! Haha Have a blessed day and thanks so much for all the advice and help.

So glad things are improving....

Pipi, please aim for the litter box, next time!!

I know.. we are crazy people on here, looking at poop pictures!!

You have to have been there, to understand how excited we are about poop!!

(((Hugs)))

This would be the time to carefully try to keep the poop at this point. Just add a bit of miralax, only a tiny bit, perhaps tomorrow. If Pipi is anything like my guy, this is where it changes consistency so fast.. one day, nice; next day hard... so keep watch...or just  bit of lactulose tomorrow.. just in case.. not both because that may be too much for her system..

So glad to see a Happy Kitty!!! makes my day!!

No, just put regular vet.. I would hate to know how much a specialist would be!
