I'm worried...

BOTH of my babies are sick and I'm worried.

Yesterday they both ate the usual 1/2 can of wet food for dinner. This morning neither one ate their usual 1/4 cup of dry for breakfast. Then Nova threw up. They acted fine all day but didn't beg for dinner like usual. I put the wet food out but neither one touched it and they didn't want treats. So they haven't eaten all day and they both vomited once this evening. I'm not sure if they've been drinking water, but their bowel movements were normal.

Could it have just been a bad can of food last night that upset their stomachs? Do I need to be super worried?

Yes, you need to worry.  Get them to a vet.

Cats need to eat.  If they don't eat for 36 hours it causes serious side-effects.  Cats not eating is a red light warning.

They might have eaten something toxic or poisonous.

Phone your vet now, and follow their advice.  Then take them in to the vet as soon as possible.

I don't want to freak you out, but you have to be brave and help them.

Thank you for the advice. If they have not eaten by morning, hubby will take them to a vet.

They have a fairly controlled environment and the only thing I can think of that they both would have eaten is the wet food which is why I wonder if it could have been a bad can of food.. or does that seem unlikely?

It could be food poisoning but I would have thought they'd have running diarrhoea in that case.

It could be they've nibbled a houseplant, which is toxic to them, many are.  If they're close friends, when one of them does something the other one has to join in.

Hubby made a vet appointment for this afternoon. Yesterday was scary, they were both very subdued. I saw them both drink a little water though and managed to force feed them a couple bites of pate mixed with warm water.

Today they are both fairly active and acting somewhat normal. They are acting like they WANT to eat but just aren't...

It's odd for both cats to fall foul of dentistry together but it's another option.

I'm extremely relieved that you got a couple of mouthfuls of pate in them.  It's way better than nothing and takes them out of the 36 hours danger zone.  I will be thinking you all.   Good luck and fingers crossed.

I'd be worried too, and my suspicions would be on the food. It's certainly not unheard of to get food poisoning, and it just takes one batch to go off.
Please keep us updated on how they're doing.

Thanks guys.

They keep sniffing around their food bowls like they want to eat but no matter what we offer they won't try it.
At least I've seen them drink a little water.

Well $300 later, the vet gave them some subcutaneous fluids and sent us home with some anti-nausea pills with the hope that they will just "get over it" soon.

They both had higher than normal temperatures and nothing in their tummies and we're a bit dehydrated.

That was my thinking, that the food was bad.
I've offered them everything from canned chicken and broth to turkey burger, other brands and flavors of wet food, treats, tuna, etc. They just feel so bad that they don't want anything.

If they have an infection caused virally, e.g., a cold, or bacterially, e.g., from food, they would run a temperature, be dehydrated, and hungry but off their food.  Have you tried just the water from tinned tuna in spring water to rehydrate them?  Or a stock cube dissolved in water.  Cottage cheese and cream cheese are another tempting food option.  Is it extra chilly where you are at the moment?  Maybe they'd appreciate a hot water bottle wrapped in a snuggle blanket.  You can also heat bricks and stones in the oven, which retain heat for a while.  If it is a straightforward strain of bacterial food poisoning, they should feel better within 48 hours from the time they ate.  I'm hoping that they're feeling better now and that this post is redundant
