Hello! My cat was given to me by a friend who didn't know much about him. I took him to the vet and found out he's about 7 years old in people years. I'm worried because lately I have seen my cat stick his tongue out. This is the second time he has done it and he just sit there with his tongue out gazing into the distance. He doesn't look like he's in pain or anything. I shook him because I thought maybe he was having a seizure and he just looked at me with eyes low and tongue out? Then he snapped out of it after a few seconds and got up like nothing ever happened. I'm confused. The first time this happened he looked as if he was going to cough up a hairball but coughed up nothing and his tongue was out just sitting there? Is this a health concern or is he just being silly

Some cats just do that, as long as there's no drool or anything else coming out of kitty's mouth it should be fine.

I've never seen him do it in the past so that's why I am worried. Hopefully he is ok

Unless the tongue is extended all the time - suggesting a respiratory problem or a mouth injury - the cat's simply relaxed and completely at ease.  Be flattered - and welcome to the TCS Forums !

I have often noticed my Siamese cats relaxing with their tongue protruding.  I have noticed this with my cats over 60 years and have never been aware of any ill effects.  My current cat, a mongrel blue white ally cat, Sukie, has never  protruded her tongue over the two years that I have known her.    I came to the conclusion that some cats like to do this and some don't.

Rest assured,

Geoffrey

Yeah, I agree with everyone.  Some cats just stick their tongues out and look goofy.  I think it's sweet.
