And I understand you are talking about the American Shorthair. I think the easiest way to get knowledge of reputable breeders is to seek them out in the registry of major USA-based cat registries,  its CFA and Tica.  Possibly some more.  Go onto their sites and look see....

Unless there is a rescue specializing in purebred ASH, it will be difficult to find them in any rescue or shelter.  Without papers or solid proofs, they looks as nice moggies.

As is the case with our european equivalent, the European... Whom are essentially our swedish "peasant-cat" but with known parentage...

It will be easier with rescue for Siameses (I know there is a couple of such).  And yet, the Siamese-organizations does admit also points of uncertain parentage - EVEN when its fairly sure they are of moggie-ancestry...  Because they know many whom wants a "siamese" not all wants a purebred siamese, they are happy with a nicely looking point...

I know it would be a lot easier to get a rescue Siamese. And it's a lovely breed. I just prefer milder tempered companions (ASH or, in the dog world, the Basset Hound). I might as well go to the local shelter and look for a calmer cat. Those who work in the shelter know their cats well.

Yes, this is a splendid idea.

IF you want a purebred shorthair, with a nice and good temperament,   Russian blue is always a good alternative.   You did mentioned RB in your parallell tread, no?

but as you say, visiting a well organized shelter is a good idea.  You perhaps get chosen by a cat in there??

Another idea is to visit a high kill pound.  The cats there knows they are in the death row, and they know when they were saved and by whom - and be grateful for it...
