My little kitty got spayed last Monday. I was so worried she would change her personality after but the vet told me that it would be best for her if she got spayed. So I did it. I regret it now though :(

She is 7 months old and has always been super loving. She would follow me EVERYWHERE and always sit next to me and when she got tired she would crawl into my arms and I would hold her while she slept.

After the surgery on Monday, that behaviour continued at first. Even in her drugged up post-anesthesia state she dragged herself into my arms. This continued for the next couple days when she was running and jumping around again.

Since yesterday she has changed though and I am so so so worried that it might be because of the surgery. :(((( For the first time yesterday she did not join my boyfriend and me on the couch while we watched TV but instead slept in another room. :(

Today she did this again, When I went to her and tried to lift her onto me she did not want this and sat down a little further away again.

I am so so so so sad and worried :((((( Im so worried it might be because of the surgery. I wish I had never taken her to do that and I just want my loving kitty back.

Spaying/neutering generally makes cats more affectionate, not less. It's possible that she's acting aloof because she's not feeling well after the surgery and needs a follow-up visit at the vet's to make sure there's no infection and pain.

I took her in for a follow-up on Wednesday and again on Friday. Next Thursday she's going to get her stitches removed.

I just talked about this with my sister and she suggested that maybe it is because I've been home watching the kitty ever since her surgery on Monday. Usually I am gone during the day and when I come back at night, the kitty is happy and wants to be with me but since she's had me around all week she also needs some time to herself sometimes. Does this sound like a possible explanation? :( I really hope everything will be back to normal soon.

You did the right thing having her spayed. It is for her health and her happiness. You made a choice for her wellbeing.

I agree that a vet should make sure she is totally well.

You should also keep in mind that many cats go through a teenage period where they get a bit distant. It could be coincidence that she is hitting that point now.

It could be that she is not feeling well right now. She could still be healing from the surgery and just wants to space to heal and recover. Or there could he something else going on making her feel ill.

A spay surgery does not usually change an animals personality. The idea of spay/neuter changing animals mostly comes from the neuter side. A male cat that is not neutered would wander around the house yowling and spraying and trying to get out. When neutered he would settle down because he wouldn't have the hormones telling him to act like a maniac. Same with females, if a female cat was in heat she could become irritable and restless untill she could mate. Spaying would have the same effect of calming her down. If anything spay/neuter would make an aniamal MORE affectionate because they no longer care about reproducing.

So this behavior your seeing is most likely not from being spayed. Unless she's feeling yucky because she's recovering from surgery. Give her a few days to do her own thing, while keeping a close eye on her. If she doesn't perk up in a few days then take her back to your vet for a surgery recheck and let them know that she is acting off.

This is a possible explanation, for sure! Your kitten is also quite possibly picking up on your anxiety.

That's a really good thought! Your not usually around when she needs her quiet time, so it seems strange to you.

Thanks for your replies you guys. :)

I was worried over absolutely nothing. She was just really sleepy. She now is as loving and affectionate as always. :) Completely back to normal. :)
