Hi everyone - just got Luna, my black DSH, home from the vet after being spayed today and have a few questions if anyone can help? FYI - Luna is 5 1/2 months.

1. Is defensive behavior normal? She was following me around when we first got home (good sign) but, I tried to confine her to one room and she is growling and swatting. Ugh. Scared she will unsettle the medicinal glue.

2. She is clearly still affected by the sedatives and anesthesia. How long will this last? Eyes look a little bigger than usual. Is this fear or drugs?

3. Doesn't seem hungry. Took bowls away after midnight. Thought she would be ravenous?

4. Still getting to know each other - this wknd will make three wks since I adopted her. Will she hate me now?

5. Will not stay still! She is walking around sniffing everything. Is this normal?

Thank you!!!

(I'm a new cat mom)

No doubt she's dis-orientated. The walking around and sniffing may be to reassure herself that everything is in it's place and it's ok.

The anesthetic is probably making her nauseated. My kitten didn't eat for a day or so. Put her favourite food out but don't be surprised if she doesn't eat it. Make sure her water is within reach, also.

If she's following you around, sit down, if you can, with something to keep you occupied and wait until she settles.  She should fall asleep then.

No, she won't hate you. You may find that she will be afraid of going to the vet. If you have trouble putting her in the carrier next time you go to the vet, put it on the floor a few days before going and play with mine in it and feed her treat so that she will go in of her own accord.

I'm from Australia so I'm not sure if they give the same anesthetic to yours as they do ours but it's good that she is this way at the moment, she needs to lie down and be quiet.

Thank you for the advice. She is dozing off and on but maybe because she's a kitten she doesn't sleep for long. Maybe 20-30 minutes at a time - which is also how she usually sleeps when I'm around.

Kittens generally sleep 16 to 20 hours a day, they don't sleep for great slabs of time like we do.
