Yet another questionable ingredient I have come across while trying to find some new canned food options for my picky cat- Tomato paste....what do people think about this one?  I was looking at Pure Vita canned food which is high up on some lists of recommendations, and the ingredients looked pretty decent overall....except for this.  I've heard a lot of mixed opinions so far since green tomatoes are toxic, but some say red paste is fine as long as there's no onions or garlic.

No! Cats don't need and can't digest either of those. Cats are obligate carnivores. They are not dogs, they cannot utilize grains or veggies. Sardines are fine as a treat, but get the ones in water only and look for the lowest sodium possible.

It's definetly an unnecessary ingredient. I'm not a fan of Pure Vita foods. I think for the price you can find something better without tomato paste.

We stay away from all cat food that has rice as an ingredient.

Yeah I thought tomato paste was pretty weird, random and unnecessary.  I wouldn't give her anything with grains, and I try to avoid fruits and veggie fillers although one of her favorite foods has some carrot and spinach bits in it, but nothing too noticeable (merrick purrfect bistro trays).  She is extremely picky so anything that she is willing to eat that doesn't contain the main harmful ingredients like carageenan, grains, cranberries, most veggies, ect. I am glad to buy as long as it isn't over the top expensive (Feline Natural and Ziwipeak would be out of my range).   So far she has rejected most of the healthy food options out there anyway.

What about Tikicat or Weruva? They have some gums, but no carageenan (not the cats in the kitchen, at least). Have you tried any freeze dried foods? FN is expensive but it's really good quality. My oldest cat doesn't eat any wet food (never has, but he eats raw and some freeze dried) but randomly started eating a can of FN i put out for one of my other cats, it was really surprising. Now he eats a can a day along with his raw, but he wont touch any other wet food, including Ziwipeak.

@missmimz   She won't touch Tiki cat but she does eat Weruva. although won't really eat the leftovers (only eats 1/2 a can at a time) so I don't give it to her too frequently, maybe once a week.  The issue with Feline Natural and Ziwipeak, aside from being really expensive is that they don't sell individual cans anywhere for me to even sample with her, and I don't want to end up buying a whole case and wasting it if she doesn't like it.  I am curious about looking into air dried or freeze dried food to eventually replace her dry food though.  Right now (as explained in another thread I just started) she gets some high calorie dry food to help her calorie intake.

Only Natural Pet sells cans of ZP you can order, but I don't think they carry FN canned foods. ZP has a "air dried" food that's a good option for replacing kibble, you can buy on Amazon with free Prime shipping. It's more like like jerky pieces, but my cats like it. Freeze dried raw foods should bed rehydrated because they contain bone, so I wouldn't feed those dry.
