I'm so glad I found this site! I could really use some advice. About 2 years ago, neighbors moved out and left behind their 6 cats. I have been feeding them ever since. We are moving in a week because this house is being torn down to build more expensive houses. Does anyone have any suggestions as how to integrate them to a new neighborhood. It is only about half a mile away, and on the other side of a busy highway. They are all very friendly former housecats. I can't keep them inside because I already have 5 of my own and a large dog. There isn't really a shed or anything to keep them in until they understand that this is where their food is. I will be taking their food bowls unwashed, so that they have their scent. Any suggestions will be very appreciated!

They really do need to be confined for at least 2 weeks or they'll try to go back to the old place. Can you borrow some large dog crates? If you cover them with a tarp they should be adequate for confinement.

Thank you for the suggestion! I do realize that they should be confined for a while. I don't know of anyone with crates, and I'm not sure I could afford to buy any. I will look around for used ones. I had a couple that was going to take them to their ranch as barn cats, but I guess they changed their mind. They simply stopped communicating. I was so disappointed!

There is really no choice whether they need to be acclimated or not honestly, otherwise as soon as they are free to, they will head right back to their old home, and nobody will be there to care for them, that is, those who might make it to the other side of the highway......

ANY type of structure that is not escape-able will do.

Rescues will loan cages so google or find all who rescue, even dog rescues, who will loan them out, most will, I know we sure do as we are happy to help anyone who cares for homeless/abandoned or feral cats.

I strongly recommend a full month of acclimating too, it's a mental process and takes time.

Especially when the former home is so near by, you need them to take in the new and forget the old.
