Hey there - new to the site, so I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Karen, a New Yorker living in Huntsville, AL (long story). In December I stopped by an adoption event "just to look at the cats," and here I am two months later with my life having been taken over by these two: Katniss (adopted as "Gumbo") and Joakim (originally "Buddy). They're not littermates, but were in the same cage at the event, and Joakim had a URI that the volunteers hadn't seemed to have noticed yet, so I pointed it out to them... and my heart broke for the little guy, since here he was, a black kitten, so already one strike against him in the adoption sweepstakes, and now he was sick. Two hours later, after much soul-searching and arguing back and forth with myself, I left with adoption papers and a week of the kittens recovering with their foster mother (Katniss was getting sick too) while I got supplies.

I adore them. Happy to be here! Oh, and Joakim is named after Joakim Noah, formerly of the Chicago Bulls, now warming the bench for the Knicks.

Aww, they're beautiful!  I love black cats.  I'm so glad they stole your heart and they now have a safe and happy home.
Welcome to TCS.

As a New Yorker i can only imagine going from here to Alabama! Welcome and the Midnight kitties Joakim and  Katniss (hunger games) are Gorge!  They sure look happy having u as their Fur mama.. they certainly stole your heart and your kindness is being repaid with their love. So are they both mended? They r well now?

Thanks! Yes, they're healthy now. I was told at the adoption event that they were "good to go" vetwise for the next year, which was nonsense, of course. They were still sick a week later when I brought them home, and the vet at the store where the event took place sent me home with antibiotics - cherry-flavored, for God's sake - to be administered over the next couple of weeks. I decided to find a permanent vet and have them checked out myself, in general, and learned that they hadn't had all the usual booster vaccinations, Jo had ear mites, and they probably both have feline herpes (which the vet said is fairly common for cats who've been in shelters). I asked for and got the remaining doses of antibiotics done up in a flavor the cats wouldn't hate as much (although they still hated me giving it to them). And eventually they stopped sneezing as often, and all is well. The rescue place that did the adoption event doesn't have a phone number on their website, nor a contact email, and you can't post your own post on their FB page, but I commented on one of theirs to point out that they need to stop telling people the pets they adopt out are "good to go" and mentioned what I've written here. I also made sure to tell them I had no regrets, I knew they were sick when I met them, and I adore them. They never responded.

ANYWAY... all this to say... no regrets whatsoever! And I love their new vet.

It was a long strange trip to AL via the Chicago suburbs, where my late husband was from and where I moved to marry him. I'd live in NYC again if I could afford to... sniff. I'm just glad my parents live on W 66th Street and Amsterdam Ave so I have a place to stay when I visit!
