Cats are amazing at hiding pain.  People sometimes misunderstand the the difference between the Sphynx and Meatloaf positions.

Sphynx, is where the head is held high up, good eye contact is being made and the cat is clearly engaged. If you blink at him/her most likely you'll get the I love you look back

Meatloaf, has a heads down position, no eye contact and sort of crouched over.  This position indicates, usually, pain of some kind and can be anything; an infection, being sick to their stomach, dental pain, etc.

It's important to be able to distinguish the difference. If you notice your cat in the Meatloaf position, perhaps a quick vet visit might be in order.
Thanks so much for your post!  As a new cat guardian, I wasn't aware of the difference between these positions.  The pictures were especially helpful!

Really, it's all about the head posture, and the eyes. It doesn't always mean the cat is ill but, it is an pretty good indicator if they are. I think most of us who have had sick cats recognize the difference pretty fast.

Yes, thank you for the photos, I think that will be very helpful to people!

I didn't want to be a Debbie Downer on the thread when I posted earlier... but I agree with you that people who have had sick cats will certainly recognize a difference in gazes and stares, etc. Hopefully the OP will be able to decipher what it means for the cat, Perry.

Where do you think?
Yet I've seen Kabby do what you call meatloaf if he falls into a deep rem sleep. But then again he always sleeps in weird positions he even sleeps on his head upside-down in a half somersault.

Vet has seen photos and he has a clean bill of health.
