Buddy hasn't had any more urinary tract symptoms since we accidentally stumbled across catinfo.org a couple of years ago, thank God!

But looking back, we now feel we may have unnecessarily limited some of his menu options by eliminating all canned food where liver is the first ingredient, per Dr. Pierson's recommendation.

Is there some mystical and magical rule of thumb re: how much liver in a cat's diet is okay?

Since there aren't that many brands that offer the shredded textures that Buddy loves and adores, we thought it might help if we could work some more flavors into his rotation.  We just didn't want to work in too much liver than is good for him. ;-)

For what it's worth, Buddy goes through four small cans of food a day, and his current favorites don't contain any liver at all.

Once a week or as a very occasional meal or treat is fine.

Should I have any concerns about how many cat food formulas include liver?  Many of the recipes that I feed to my gal list liver as the 3rd or 4th ingredient.  Lately I have eliminated all recipes where liver is among the top 2 ingredients.  And is there any practical distinction (nutritionally speaking) between beef liver and chicken liver?  She does eat the Venison recipe from Natural Balance, which includes Venison liver.

Great question!  I'd like to know that myself.

Our other cat prefers cheaper brands of food, and while that's great for our pocketbook, it's amazing how many include liver in there somewhere. ;-)
