Cat vomited and diarrhea, what could it be?

Hello everyone,

One of my cats vomited tonight 6 hours after his last Friskies canned food dinner.

He vomited quite a bit twice, then immediately went to his litterbox and pooped solid and watery poop with a horrible smell.

Then he went to his bed and not 5 minutes after he puked again what seemed to be the last bit of food in his stomach.

I have been watching him and offered water, but he does not want to drink. He has plenty available.

I noticed his paw shiver when he retracted it, but that was for just a moment and now it has not happened again.

Any suggestions? I fed the same food to another cat I have and he had no issues. Could it be a stomach virus ?

Should I feed him wet food again? Maybe from a different can this time, just in case there was something he didn't tolerate in his food?

Thanks

How is he doing now? If he is still having symptoms I would take him to a vet because there is a risk of dehydration. If he doesn't eat within 24 hours you'll also want to visit the vet because cats don't handle not eating for prolonged periods of time and you want to get them in quickly for that too.

If he hasn't had any further symptoms, I would check the expiration date on the can he last ate from and probably return any others of the same flavor and date. Maybe let the manufacture know there was a problem and it made your cat sick in case others have the same problem. Also make a note of the ingredients in the can, if it happens again compare the ingredients between that one and one he hasn't reacted to. Whatever doesn't overlap I would try to avoid in the future assuming that one of those is the cause of the problem. It is hard to say if there was a problem with the particular can or a reaction with your cat specifically based on a one time occurrence so I would cover both possibilities.

The severity of the reaction makes me think it is more likely something not related to the food though. Maybe he got into something else? Does he have access outside or to live plants?

I've had cats act like this when they drink milk, adult cats are usually lactose intolerant. I've had them vomit and get terrible diarrhea. Since the other cat is fine, I would say it's not the food but something he got into. He does need to drink though, if he doesn't in the next day take him in to get sub Q fluids, it's quick and easy and may save his life. I pray he gets better and it's maybe just a stomach flu, but watch him carefully.

My cat vomited once. I started the usual investigation, assumptions and ended in the usual calling the vet. All these actions took some hours. The vet told me to keep an eye on the cat and if he does not eat or vomit again to present the cat to him asap.

After some 6-7 hours, the cat return to normal (eating, drinking etc.). But during those hours was rather petrified - doing nothing. I did nothing else than look to the cat. Pretty awful time to be honest.

Never know what happened.

Sounds like something wrong with him. I've never had a cat act like that unless something was wrong. The fact there was vomit and diarrhea make it sound like it best to visit a vet. Vomit with hair in it you may be able to say they are trying to cough up a hairball but stinky diarrhea means something else.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

He seems to be doing well.

This morning around 6am I gave him about an ounce of wet food and he devoured it. He did not puke it.
By 12 pm he was asking for food and gave him another ounce mixed with water and he ate it all.
So far he seems back to his old self, but I am monitoring him closely.

I don't allow him outside and we have all our foods and theirs in containers. We are careful with that as we know he is like a vacuum cleaner and would give it a try with just about anything.

I was super worried last night, especially since he seemed to have shivers for a little bit. He slept it off it seems , but will keep a close eye for sure.

Thanks again.,
