Hi,
Not sure how this works. Sorry if this post should not be new, I have posted before but have a new issue. We have 8 ferals cats that we take care of. We recently had the female fixed but now they are crossing the street more. We lost one kitten bc it went to the main road and was hit. We live off a busy road and we are 2 houses down by main road in a col de sac and I'm afraid our cats will get hit again by cars because they are roaming more. Is there anything we can do to keep all safe from streets and cars! I know feral lives are dangerous and they like to roam but I'm am very afraid, scared and anxious that one or more will get killed by a car!
Any advice? How do you all stay calm and never worry?

1) Make them indoors
2) Make the fence around the yard inescapable. My vet was telling one of her friends did this where the fence allows animals to climb in but a cat can't climb out. I think it's a topper to the fence that bends back on itself. The vets friend had to purposefully shoo out random cats that got stuck in the yard.
3) Make a large outdoor catio set up they live in.

My cats are indoor outdoor and I know the dread of street crossing. Luckily we are a half a mile from the Main Street and our street loops to the one next to ours. Not a lot of traffic basically. Behind us is a senior housing complex so our cats can't get in trouble there and the other street has a field and railroad tracks. My cats though are pretty good at staying on our side, except Link who is determined to eat the Meow Mix across the street *sigh*.

Thanks for your advice
We have 8 so it's hard to take all of them in and they seem much happier outdoors! We have toys and lots of warm shelter for them and we are thinking of buying a fence but need to save up bc we had fence guy came and it's expensive! I try giving our cat lectures haha but they never listen! The thought of one or more going missing or getting killed
Makes me sick to my stomach

I know in my area it seems more people speed at night. Plus reduced visibility at night. If you can keep them inside or in a garage at night that might help reduce the chances some.

Are they roaming because of conflicts in the group?  One or two may be trying to take charge.  You might be able to help this by feeding in two separate areas - establishing separate territories, so to speak

Also, is there a possibility of building them an enclosure?  I had a big one (15'x45') wired all around and across the top.  Yours need not be that big if there are plenty of shelves for the cats to be high up. I had considered a fence but it was too expensive and there''s really no totally cat-proof fence.

I had a chicken coop inside the enclosure for their shelter and litter box.  You could also attach one to a shed.

They have "catios" available on Amazon, so you don't have to  build from scratch.

The busy road next to our house was exactly the reason I built ours.  Too many dead cats.
