I have desperately been researching the healthiest food type for my cat ( Cinnamon) and why. I need to get her off kibble ASAP! I'm having difficulty finding a premium Dehydrated/Freeze dried organic cat food with little carbohydrates. Has anyone tried Primal dehydrated? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Where do you think?
I would try something with moisture in it. Cats will get kidney problems if they don't have moisture in their food.

None of the freeze dried raw foods are organic, but Primal, Stella and Chewy, Feline Naturals, and Fresh is Best are all good. Some of them have some veggies in them, but it's minimal. Even though Primal has a lot listed, they carbs are low, so it's a small amount overall. Feline Naturals has both a canned line and a freeze dried line, both are very good.

I too was looking for the "healthiest" cat food. I like Nature's valley Instinct limited ingredient canned food. It seems to have just meat and nutrients. Also I use raw food (Bravo, Primal, Radcat).

My cat likes variety otherwise I would have just stuck with the raw food.

Primal's freeze-dried foods are decent and pretty low-carb but they're also inconsistent -- our cats have balked at two bags of Primal in the last year or so. I think Feline Natural is better food anyway: our cats really enjoy their lamb/chicken. We currently feed them various blends of that, pork Primal (though that's going off the menu at the end of the current bag), and Northwest Naturals turkey, which they also like and which also has a simple recipe. Those are all freeze-dried foods. We also feed a small Rad Cat meal every day.

@IndyJones, freeze-dried raw foods are designed to be rehydrated: we usually use water but sometimes I have "chicken water" on hand (from boiling chicken pieces for human meals) and that makes even tastier food for the cats. Or so they tell me.

you can always try coked food. it has most of the benefits of raw (except the rawness its self) without most of the downsides, and you don't need a high end meat grinder.  you jsut buy ground meat, brown it in water, and ad he mix ( U-Stew is the most common brand).

I see. I only have experience with the primal pheasant which comes in a puck you just place in the bowl.

The Primal pheasant is frozen, though, right? If so, it still has sufficient moisture to be ready for plating.

Yes although Hector wouldn't eat it without a quick nuke. She had resorption so her teeth were sensitive to the cold.

Another trick I've used to dechill food just slightly is to add a bit of water and spread it around on the plate. I used to do that back when I fed frozen Primal: I'd defrost it in the refrigerator, mush, and add a little more water before feeding it. The cats later decided they preferred freeze-dried, which is always at room temperature and somehow tastier to them!

I would sincerely like to thank everyone for their thoughtful suggestions. I'm going to try Stella & Chewy's Freeze Dried Turkey Dinner. I read that it's made in the USA only.

That's exactly what we give our cat, the S&C Tummy Ticklin' Turkey Freeze Dried Raw and he loves it!

neely neely , I am having Milly try this food, beginning today. Any suggestions on easing her into it? Did you(r cat) ever have any negative responses to it? Do you add water so that it turns into a slurry of sorts -- or do you just crumble it and soak those bits in water for a minute or two?
TIA

FYI, I also have used Primal freeze dried raw and Carleton likes it as well. I don't feed the S&C or Primal exclusively but do give it daily in the evening. Absolutely no negative responses, he took to it immediately. So well that it was gone as soon as I put the plate down. DH asked where the food went and I said, in his tummy. I crumble it first then add warm water, wait about 30 -60 seconds and make a soupy consistency. You can try different consistencies to see what your cat prefers best. But keep in mind that because it is raw food you should thoroughly wash your hands and clean the utensils as well as preparation area. Best of luck, please keep me posted. :crossfingers:

Thank you. She already has eaten S&C Absolutely Rabbit frozen raw as one of her daily meals (I feed that and canned food, with dry as training treats), so I'm familiar with the scenario.:D

I just haven't tried freeze dried raw and wasn't sure if I was supposed to dissolve it all in water or not. I guess the Milly Beans will tell me what she prefers! Thanks again.
