Hi All,

We've got a 5 yrs old cat who started snoring while asleep 3 months ago. Anybody has experience in stg similar?

+ info: she's also purring very loud because she had cat cold when was little (before adoption), but that was always like that. A week ago vet made x-ray, took blood, nothing (maybe thyroid..). No mood,  weight or level of activity change. No change of environment, haven't catch a cold. But now sometimes you can hear her breathing louder too when awake. Any ideas/experience?

Not sure if this will be helpful, but two of my three cats snore.  One snores like a human.  Both of the ones that snore started well after they were adults.  It concerned me as well, so off to the vet we went when my oldest one started up, the best I remember he was about 7 when we brought him inside to live (former outdoor kitty), and he's 13 now.  Turned out he has severe seasonal allergies, which has been treated successfully, but he still snores!  Kind of a high pitched "SNEEERRRRK" noise.

The other one is overweight, and the vet believes in his case it is his weight causing a lot of it.  He also does heavy breathing at times.  Not much we can do about it, but we find it a continual source of amusement in our household.  He is the one that snores like an old drunk passed out in a bar floor.  He saws logs.  He is loud, as loud as my boxer dog snored, at the least.

Note--he is on a diet.  With not much progress either, but we persist with portion control. The vet said he doesn't want it coming off fast, just slow and steady weight loss.  As long as my vet says he sees no problem, we will just continue to chuckle about it.

Is your kitty overweight, or otherwise have nasal/respiratory issues?

Thanks for the answer. She has some nasal 'issues' due to cat cold virus she had before we took her in. She purrs quite loud, sometimes breathes harder after purring a lot, but this was considered a non-issue by our vet and has always been like this. The snoring is new.

I understand the concern.  Mine seemingly started up just all at once, but all is okay according to the vet.  And I mean my younger one snores LOUD.  One night he and my hubby were sleeping in the recliner together, and the cat was louder than hubby.

My cat snores as well.  So loud in fact that when I was with my ex she would get mad at me because she thought that it was me snoring when it was the cat.

If you use a clay litter the dust that they kick up when using it could cause some respiratory issues as well.  When I move away from clay it did improve (a little bit.)

We had to move away from clay based litter too due to my husband's allergies. It did make a bit of an improvement in him--but not the log-sawyer haha!
