My cat is 14 pounds. He is a Russian blue and big but he only eats 9 ounces of canned max cat per day.

Isn't it weird that he got fat on such a regular amount of wet food?

For a more full answer, yes.

Using Lamb and Turkey as an example. At 81 kcal per 3 oz can that is 243 cals a day. An indoor cat should be eating 20 calories per pound and active outdoor cat 35 calories. If your cat is an indoor only that means he is eating enough food for a 12 pound cat. If you thrown in cat treats or are feeding a more calorie heavy food (I think I saw between 70 and 90 calories a can depending on the flavor). Add on there is wheat gluten in the food which can cause weight retention. Then it wouldn't be unheard of to hit the 14 pound mark. Thats only a difference of 40 calories, not a huge amount.

I asked about a picture because weight isn't as important as body condition. If you cat is well proportioned and muscular then you should be getting in more calories. Rounder may mean you need to cut calories some to bring the weight down. To give you an idea my boy is 13 pounds but extremely active. He does about 400-425 calories a day and has a very defined figure so it is a healthy amount for him.

Yeah, I weighed him at the vet and he is 11.8, not 14. I was doing the weight myself and then weigh myself holding him method. Not very accurate I guess.

11.8 would be exactly what that amount of food would give you with an indoor cat. Yay for math! If you look at the body condition chart Brian007 posted and feel the need to reduce calories it's 20 calories per pound per day. You should reduce very slowly (cut maybe 10 calories down a week until you get where want him to be).

Did you take him to the vet? Maybe check for feline diabetes? Also, Russian Blues tend to have a slightly more slender build than most domestic cats (take a look at the CFA website for pictures) so just keep that in mind when evaluating your cat to see if he's in good physical shape. Russian Blues are, ideally, fine-boned, yet muscular cats. However, you can't evaluate based on weight alone, same as for people, I think the feline BMI/BFI chart is a great resource!
