Hi,

I have a rescue kitten who is about 5 months old. She has been with us for 2 months. A week ago she developed diarrhoea after going out for the whole day for the first time.I took her to the vet who gave her a vitamin B injection and probiotic powder. The vet said her rectum seemed enlarged for her size - which wasn't helping her to be clean . She had diarrhoea on her fur and left a trail in the house. She got better this week but after a day out again yesterday- diarrhoea and little trails on the floor after using the litter tray have reappeared.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to stop the cycle and also why her rectum is enlarged?

Thanks

It's possible that she is getting into something outside that is causing the digestive upset. She could be catching mice or she could be going to neighbors houses and being given food that upsets her system. Because she goes outside it's possible that she has picked up an intestinal parasite that is causing the diarrhea. You should bring a stool sample to the vet to have it tested for parasites. Because she seems fine until she goes outside you should try to keep her inside for a few days to see if things settle down. Long term you should also consider keeping her as an indoor only cat. You could take her for walks or supervised visits outside but letting her roam free does expose her to a lot of dangers.

Also just noted that she is only five months old. Has she ever been dewormed? Is she up to date on vaccines yet? Also most importantly is she spayed? If she is not yet spayed she could be coming into sexually maturity and going into heat. This would explain her being irritated when you picked her up. Also if she is going out for a full day and she is not spayed you should be concerned over if she has mated and is possible pregnant. She can get pregnant at her age.

Hi,
Yes she was de wormed at the vet and is neutered.
She has gone a week without it reoccurring but happened again yesterday after all day out. She is licking her backside a lot and I was in the room when a spasm occurred and I could hear her stomach churn then she had an involuntary motion which shocked her.

I will get her back to the vet I think- she must feel bad poor thing

Good idea to keep your kitty indoors. There are so many things cats get into going outside that can cause problems, especially for a 5 month old. If she stays in you can see if the problem clears up.

Yes I think she should definitely go back to the vet for another check. Make sure to let the vet know that this only happens after she has been outside for a full day. It's important they have all the information. Once again I would reccomended keeping her inside until you get the situation under control. And maybe even keeping her indoors long term.five months old is really young for a cat to be roaming free unattended.
