For those of you who feed your cats Wellness brand canned food in the large 12.5 oz size, below is the letter from the CEO of Wellness. Here's the direct link: https://www.wellnesspetfood.com/update/

February 10, 2017

Dear Pet Parents,

Here at WellPet we work hard every day to make sure our natural pet food is the best it can be. So when we were notified this week that a very small amount of our canned cat product may not have been manufactured to our high-quality standards, we decided to voluntarily recall it from retailers’ shelves.

Though the chance of having affected product is remote, withdrawing these products is the right thing to do.

Keeping your trust in our brand is so important to us, and so we wanted to let you and our retailers know right away. Since the products may not have been made consistent with our quality assurance guidelines, we want to replace them. Our Quality team learned that a foreign material was found in non-WellPet products made in the same facility, and so we are taking this conservative step to ensure the well-being of cats and to put our consumers’ minds at ease.

The recipes are in 12.5 oz. cans with the following best buy dates:
 RecipeBest By Date
Wellness Canned Cat 12.5 ozChicken & Herring08/04/2019

Please click here  for how the best by date appears on your can.

If you have any of the 12.5 oz recipes with these best buy dates, you may email us at [email protected]  or call us at 1-877-227-9587  and we’ll replace your product.

No other Wellness recipes that your pets currently enjoy are involved, so you can continue to feed your pets Wellness with full confidence.

WellPet has worked hard to earn the trust of pet parents, and we fully intend on maintaining that trust. As a parent of a yellow lab named Rommel, I understand the sense of responsibility we all share for our dogs and cats. Rest assured we are taking every action to ensure that our highest standards are being met, and product quality and safety will always be our top priority.

Sincerely,

Camelle Kent

....I’m reaching out from Wellness Natural Pet Food because I wanted to help answer your questions. Our Quality team was notified that a small amount of metal was found in non-WellPet products made in the same facility. There were no injuries. We’d like the chance to talk with you more to explain our Quality Assurance procedures so that you can feel confident feeding our food. We’ll be open throughout the weekend and you can reach us tomorrow starting at 9am eastern at 877-227-9587. Also, please know that we’ve taken the step of removing carrageenan from all of our wet cat recipes. Starting soon, Wellness cat cans will have a new look and will be 100% carrageenan free. You can see an overview of the changes here: wellnesspetfood.com/cat. Thanks.

So, clearly they're sufficiently concerned about this to open their call center this weekend. Perhaps the very recent Evangers pentobarbitol issue sparked that decision.

(About six weeks ago, subscribers to the Wellness Newsletter (includes discount coupons. folks) were notified about upcoming labeling changes and the elimination of Carrageenan: http://www.wellnesspetfood.com/cat-transition/complete-health.html.)

......................

Meantime......"a small amount of metal"......and, "no injuries"....WHAT????   'Raises more questions than answers !

I do wish they'd have been less vague, but it sounds like they're choosing to be safe rather than sorry, which is commendable. The evanger's recall was not caught in time to prevent illness in 5 dogs and death in one. It looks like they are well ahead of that.

I buy this Wellness line of food and it's distressing that customers aren't informed more directly.  I order from Chewy and I didn't receive an email notifying me of the recall.  I think as a long time customer of Chewy who has ordered Wellness 12.5oz cans for years now--an email would really be helpful.  Surely it would not be difficult for Chewy to find who has ordered big cans of Wellness in their database and communicate with them.  I only stumbled upon this post, more than a month after the recall.  Luckily, my most recent case has an expiration date of July 2019.

Perhaps Chewy did check their database and knew I hadn't purchased the cans with the affected expiration dates and that's why I wasn't contacted?
