Sometimes people leave stuff by the dumpster. And I keep trying to think of how I could turn it into shelter for the cats. They like to hang out underneath the steps going up to the apartments. So I would like to put something down there where they can hide and not get wet. But I don't want to spend much money or time on it because the maintenance guys might just remove it and throw it away. I wish I knew how to do carpentry. I often see chairs out by the dumpster and I'm thinking it would be nice to put a little cat house on a chair, so when it rains the water won't get in. They don't really need a shelter. They are surviving without it, because I am in Texas where it doesn't get too cold. But I hate too see my little buddies all wet when it rains.

I found this online, looks really cool... but I have to figure out where to get the signs.

I think a simple rubbermaid shelter or even an old styrofoam cooler would work well.  Lots of people order meats that come in styrofoam coolers that they then just throw out.

Here are some ideas.  You can then place the shelter up on a piece of wood or bricks to keep it off the ground and prevent water from getting inside.

Remember if you are feeding the strays/ferals that they then become strong and healthy and able to reproduce over and over.  The kindest thing you can do is to be sure the cats are spayed/neutered.  There are often low cost spay/neuter clinics that offer vouchers for feral cats.  Also a rescue group might be able to help you.  Once the cats are fixed, it will cut down on cat fighting, spraying, and of course the multitude of unwanted kittens.

Thank you for caring about these cats and wanting to help.

Thanks for the suggestions ShadowsRescue. I have been eyeing the Rubbermaid containers at the store, hoping they will have a really great sale on them. Mainly I have hesitated on buying those because I'm afraid they will get stolen. I have gotten most of the cats at my complex fixed. Well I just trapped them, my good friend with a local group has fixed them for me, since I am carless. But with another rundown complex next door, I'm afraid I will never be able to finish the job of fixing them all. So many stray cats...but I keep trying.

How awesome that you have been able to get them fixed.  It is such a hard job and even harder when the cats keep coming.  It does seem never ending, but eventually the population will start to decline.

Thank you so much for helping these cats.
