I used to want to be a 'flower counter' when I was a child, and lie around in meadows all day long
Still wouldn't mind that now, come to think of it.

My great aunt used to work in the Fry's Chocolate factory. She told me that it took a few weeks before the over-powering smell of chocolate in the factory stopped making her nauseous and that after working there she never wanted to eat chocolate again.

Imagine that! It's just not worth the risk.

I lived on the road next to Terry's chocolate factory in York, England, and sometimes the smell of chocolate was yummy but more often than not the smell of burnt caramel was utterly putrid and got up your nostrils and everywhere.  Ugh, yuck, I can still smell it now.  Lots of my friends worked at either Terry's or Rowntrees chocolate factory and, yes, they got over the free chocolate thing very quickly.  Terry's closed down a few years back because it was bought by Kraft, who mismanaged it into the ground.  This is incredibly sad as there was nothing wrong with it and it employed a lot of happy workers.

This is the one my Great Aunt used to work in. It's gone now too. It gives me goosebumps watching the video. When we were kids we used to ride ponies around the countryside there and the Fry's chimney always dominated the landscape.

It gave me goosebumps too.  It's a very well made, poignant video, thanks for sharing it.  My mum's favourite chocolate was Frys dark mint.  It's so sad that these factories closed down, it was nothing to do with lack of sales but corporate greed.

Our street was the nearest row of houses to Terrys factory in this photo.  Apparently, the building, like Frys is being developed into luxury apartments.

Rowntrees was bought by Nestle when I lived in York.  They also destroyed the work ethos of the factory.  And although it's still manufacturing chocolate, it isn't held in high esteem by the people of York, whereas it used to be the very essence of socialist welfare, charity, and care of its workers and their families.  Our street and all the neighbouring streets were built by Terrys as homes for their workers - bygone days, hey.

Thanks heaps for the reminder and your memories of Frys

Apparently Frys closed down in 2010 after being bought by Kraft, which is the same time that they bought and ruined Terrys.  They have a lot to answer for!

Cadbury is in my hometown of Birmingham. This is Bournville where the original factory is still going. Cadbury wanted a "factory in a garden" and that's what he achieved. Believe it or not, Bournville has hardly changed since I was a child.

I felt the same working for Dairy Queen.  I was never a big ice cream person anyway; but I came home smelling like sweetened grease every night. It was gross!

My mother once job coached a person working at a chocolate factory or maybe it was just some kind of distribution place.  She came home with 2 pounds of chocolates.  For some reason I think they were Godiva. It's been years and I don't know of any Godiva factories or stores in the area.  She used to drive a lot for work so maybe it was a few hours away and has since closed. Or I could just be wrong.  Either way; they were GOOOOOD!!!

My kids are participating in a "Chocolate Run" at a local college tomorrow.  The culinary program is supposed to be catering the after run refreshments with chocolate desserts.  I wonder if I get to eat since I'm just a spectator?

That's exactly the way I feel about ice-cream! Sweet cold and a dairy product, my 3 least favourite things.

I only worked at DQ for 6 weeks and I couldn't stand going in there for years afterward.
Funnily enough; the only food I craved while I was sick last month was Oreo blizzards. I ended up with a couple Oreo McFlurries. That was close enough.

@Primula  @Norachan

I was horrified when my eyes very first scanned these words this evening, thinking that evil Kraft were at it again but this time with sacred Marmite, eeeeeK!  For those non-British people this will mean nothing.  But for British Marmite lovers, it means everything!  It's the top story on the BBC world news website, which speaks volumes (I bet the Beeb is full of Marmite, buttered toast & tea addicts).

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-39006302

Thankfully, Kraft aren't getting their grubby mits on it though, phew!  I don't think the country would cope if Marmite was driven out of supply by bad management.  I, for one ,would simply shrivel up and cease to be.

Unilever are bad enough, they held Marmite to ransom last year and the supermarkets couldn't get hold of any.  There was panic buying and empty shelves.  It's so endearingly funny and British.  Very worrying though

Brian, I hate Marmite. Always have.

IIRC, weren't Kraft trying to take over Cadbury at one time? I know one of my bros fiercely fought them on that.

I KNEW you were going to say that, hahaha!  You either Love it or you Hate it, hehehe
But even Marmite-haters understand the importance of the brown stuff to the UK's economy and mental well-being.

I once worked with someone who's relative worked for a famous Australian chocolate company (they have since been bought out). Part of her job was to pick the flies out of the chocolate before it set.

Which reminds me of the woman who posted that she worked for an Australian manufacturer (again, bought out), Her job was to be in control of the vats of crushed pineapple. She had a terrible hangover and asked to be relieved because she felt sick. Her boss told her no and she vomited in the vat. When she confessed it to her boss he told her to mix it in, nobody would notice.
