Hello, I have an older cat who goes outside multiple times during the day, and likes to come home only at night. In the summer, my parents keep the deck door open for her so she can come and leave as she pleases. A few months ago, I got a new kitten Kisa, and I'd like her to stay an indoor cat as I've had bad experiences with my cats being outdoor (multiple of them have gotten lost) and I don't want to go through that again, especially since Kisa is the perfect kitten for me. I spoke to my parents about this, and they told me that they wouldn't make sure to keep the door closed and that they won't make sure she doesn't go outside. What can I do to keep my kitten indoors, then?

If you can afford it, and if they are willing to make the modification to their door, you could get one of the pet doors that only opens to a pet wearing a specific "key fob" collar attachment that will unlatch it.  There are also "inserts" for sliding glass doors that have a solid floor-to-top of door panel with a pet door at the bottom that only opens for the pet wearing the collar with the chip that unlocks it.

Other than that, can you restrict your kitten's access to the room with the deck door?  I would think that is your only other option if they are unwilling to keep the door shut.

I have to ask---don't bugs come in the house if the door is open all the time??  I live in an area with a ton of mosquitoes, creepy-crawlies, flies, etc. is why I ask!!

Sadly, our house has a very open floor plan and the whole main floor is sort of one big room- it's the dining room, kitchen, and living room area (the door for the deck is in the living room) and that's where my kitten spends the most time. As for the special cat doors with the collars, it's highly unlikely because my older cat absolutely despises wearing collars (no matter what kind we put on her, she meows and follows us around until we take it off and if we don't, she starts wrecking things in the house for revenge haha).

Surprisingly not that many bugs come in! I don't know if it's just the area that I live in, but we rarely get anything unwanted in the house! About half of the time, we only have the net closed just in case, though- my older cat knows how to open it though (she grabs the corner with her nails and pulls it open and then leaves the house) and whenever we close the net, she opens it again and we don't really pay attention to it that much to close it every time she opens it a little bit, so it wouldn't be possible to just keep my kitten indoors with the net always closed. Even if we close it as soon as we notice it's open, my kitten would already jump outside (she's really little and very fast)!
