My vet says that my cat suffers from anxiety and stress related to not being outdoors (it gets so cold if we let him out as long as wants to be out he'd most likely get hurt) So someone had brought up collars that are made for cats/dogs with aroma therapy that can help them calm down. Has anyone tried these? Any success? Any comments?

Have you tried a Feliway diffuser plug, which emits friendly cat de-stressing pheromones?

Avena sativa, or common wild oat, is calming and most cats go potty over the smell.  You can buy seeds to grow your own cat grass for him to munch on, buy the dried plant to stuff into toys, buy a ready made liquid for adding to water, or add some porridge oats to wet food.

Valerian is useful for calming cats.  Again, you can buy it in many forms (it's the root that is used) but Behar make a drop-on formula, as well as treats:

Catnip  and hops  are also calming.

As for aromatherapy, many essential oils are toxic to cats if ingested or applied topically.  However, you could use a couple of drops of calming oil in an oil burner, or a drop or two on a radiator.  Here is a list of oils that are toxic to cats.  And another extensive article on aromatherapy for pets.

Chamomile is very soothing:

Bach Flower Remedies are also extremely useful for a number of emotional upsets:
