Hi,
My young female cat gave birth to 5 kittens on Friday 3rd Feb.
Unfortunately I was not there for the labour & birth.
All kittens look ok but I think mum is not well.
I am giving her regular food, water, litter tray. She has been eating, this morning she seems to be in distress & pain.
My problem is I do not have enough money for emergency vet. I will try & take her tomorrow and try & sort out a payment plan with a vet.
I live in the U.K. and I am on state benefits!
Before anyone in uk suggest PDSA there are none near where I live.
Thanks for reading
Nicole

You can perhaps phone the earest anyway, and hear if they have any suggestions?  Otherwise, there is left to raise money in other ways.  Neighbours, family... You can perhaps promise to do something, alike carry what older neigbours bought from the shop.  Or help with taking away the snow.  Or helping with picking up apples in the late summer and fall..

I know its easier said than done, but in times of emergency, the norm of social behavior is to help out if asked.  Even if you usually arent on speaking terms with each other.

Im momma manages this, its not enough with regular food having 5 kittens.  She shall have food of kitten-type, more rich in nutrients and fats...   If you can get goats milk, its always a good supplement for her, and works also as emergency kmr for the kittens.   Is cheaper than bought kmr too.

What exactly are mommas symtoms?  Perhaps we know of some home remedy to try, while you wait for the vet appointmet...   The vets are cheaper on weekdays.

Hi,
Thanks for reply, I am disabled so the list of jobs for others ares beyond my capabilities.

Mums symptoms are, she is warm to touch and just tolerates her head stroked, go anywhere near her stomach she gets very angry. I think she has an infection.

Trouble is I realis this is mainly a USA site and we live in the UK !

So know must things like goats milk are not sold in small corner shops.

I see.  Yet, momma is sick, you must count she will collapse soon as she cant get effective vet help, and you will have 5 infants to take care of.  Even if you manage to get vet help to momma, its fully possible you will need to supplement the infants and help momma in her tasks...

So whatever you do, you MUST get home kitten mothermilk replacement or goats milk, asap.  Also a little needleless syringe, or a dropper...

And yes, momma sounds as a typical vet errand.  I do dearly hope you will afford to get help tomorrow monday, with the cheaper  week-days vet...

It sounds like mama kitty may have mastitis, and is running a fever. This is painful. She will need antibiotics to get better. It should not cost too much for her to be seen and given meds. You must take the newborns along to the vet as well, since they should not be alone and without a heat source.

In the meantime, you can apply a warm, damp compress to her nipples. Do this repeatedly. It will offer some relief.

My concern is whether the babies are able to get enough milk. If mom is not letting them nurse, they will need to be hand fed with a needleless syringe and kitten formula or goat's milk.

We have quite a few members and advisors who live in the UK! [emoji]128522[/emoji]

Proceeding. 1. Here in sweden, its often small food shops owned by immigrants from middle east, whom do sell cartooned goats milk.  I presume such is common in UK too.   Polish shops may have it too.

2. You will also need some sort of heating pad.  Both for momma, if she gets really weak, and for kittens, if momma cant take care of them no more.   If you can get a scale measuing in grammes it will help you to see how they are faring.  But  first emergency first...

I'm in u.k and all supermarkets sell goats milk, it is all we drink in this house. Is it safe to give kittens if need be?
