I am sure that this has come up frequently and possibly someone can just refer me to a link.  I have a young male cat, Jamie, who is about 7 months old. He is adorable and now very spoiled. ( I rescued him from my neighbor's back yard....she has nothing to do with his presence there as he was dumped....when he was 4 weeks old and in pretty bad shape).  He is recently fixed, had an entire blood panel, and is in good health; however, at work someone mentioned her cat having a major FUS episode and one thing that she was told was that he could not eat fish based cat food. Problem...Jamie loves fish. I have googled several sites looking for some specific recommendations for food, canned and dry, which will prevent this from ever happening to him...not prescription diets for after the fact.  If he has to give up fish, I am fine with that, but would like some names of brands or companies which have good quality food which has been appealing to other people's cats.

Congratulations and thank you for rescuing Jamie. FUS/FLUD occurs often in cats, both genders and is easily prevented with diet. Cliff notes version is that cats have a low thirst drive, so when fed only kibble they don't drink enough water to compensate. General guidelines push water, water & more water.  NO kibble, no fish, seafood or fish by products, as these are high in phosphorous DO feed only canned, add a bit of water to each serving, and have extra water dishes available. Foods with low phosphorous and magnesium are best. There is a ton of info by a vet on www.catinfo.org   she explains the disease, what to feed and nutrition guidelines on P&M, carbs and so forth

I'm sure others on here will chime. I adopted my 3 yr old male a few months ago. I knew about his diagnosis at time of adoption, the folks here were awesome helping me sort out what to feed. I was going cross eyed. We did the Royal Canin 'script foods till he cleared up. I've since, per recommendations and my vet approval, am feeding, I order thru Chewy.com

Dave's Restricted Diet low magnesium and phosphorous

Natures Variety Instinct Chicken and Rabbit flavors

There are other brands that can also be fed, I just chose these. I also feed as treats Pure Bites freeze dried chicken or duck, one ingredient and FF Purely, chicken

Let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Thank you so much. I prefer to feed wet, and have three fountains in the house in addition to water dishes. My oldest cat just passed away at 18 and had lived a successful life on wet food, preferring non fish flavors until she was very old. I am going to research your suggestions.

We always add in water to our cat's wet food so it's like thick oatmeal to make sure they get enough fluids. We also have water dishes throughout the house.

One note, you don't really need to restrict magnesium and phosphorus unless your cat is prone to FUS/FLUD.

We also feed only wet foods with extra water added in to each meal.  AND give only treats like PureBites.  I currently have two males, both will be 8 years old in the next few weeks, and neither has ever has urinary issues.  They are NOT fed a diet low in either of those two minerals, and they do eat fish on occasion.  Not for every meal, certainly, but I like to rotate their meals, and often there will be meals like Turkey with Salmon or Chicken with Tuna, that sort of thing, so that's what they get.

In this thread the first three or four  posts actually list some brand names if you are interested: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/297027/best-canned-food-brand
