Today Leo is at the Vets for his dental, it was supposed to be a week ago but got moved due to our vet having a family emergency, luckily the medicine we got last time really helped him and he has been a lot happier and has eaten so much better!

Today he has his dental and full assessment of his mouth and teeth to see if any extractions are required, if a full teeth extraction is required then he will have to go to the specialist dentist here in Phoenix and we've been told he would need to stay at their practice for 5 to 7 days, have a feeding tube and the whole procedure and X-rays will cost about $3,500!!

We are hoping that the dental will reveal the extent of his stomatitis and our vet will do a few extractions if needed.

Please send positive vibes our way!! I'm at work this evening and feel like I'm going to be on edge till I hear something! Luckily my sister in law works at the vets so she will be keeping me updated!!

Special thoughts being sent your way for Leo, (and you).
Hope all goes well and the dentist will be able to do any necessary extractions so he doesn't have to go to the specialist in Phoenix.  Please keep us updated on his progress.  Lucky for you your sister-in-law works at the vet and can look after him.

Thanks, he is having his dental done now, any tips anyone on how to deal with Leo after when he comes home? I've heard of people giving their cats baby food to help in the first couple of days, shall I get some for him?

Thanks

I imagine they will put him on antibiotics and advise you to feed him soft food for a few days.  That's all they did with our guy when he had 4 teeth extracted in one day.

I don't understand why if he needed a full mouth extraction he would need to stay in the hospital for 5 - 7 days.  (or even need a feeding tube)  Many cats have that done and I've not heard of them getting a feeding tube, and most cats getting feeding tubes go home immediately and their guardians do the feedings

Hello everyone,

Leo made it through his dental just fine, he had 3 small teeth at the front removed as they were loose anyway but the vet said his teeth are actually in good shape, the concern is with his gums as they are very red and inflamed (I'll put some pics on for you to see.)

Anyway he's come home on the medication he has been on for a couple of weeks and we have been told to continue with that for a week and go for a check up in 7 days, he is eating his soft food brilliantly and doesn't seem bothered by his mouth at all. He was a perfect patient at the vets and everyone loves him!

Our vet has suggested us having a chat to the dentist vet for a consultation just to see if he has any ideas on the gum issues, we are hoping that the gums will calm down now his teeth are clean but our vet just wants us to be prepared just in case more work needs doing.
We may also get opinions from other specialist denists too just to see what their suggestions are.

Leo is currently running round the house and it's 5.30am :smshfrk: he did sleep a little bit but was up and down a lot of the night undecided about where to sleep!

Did the vet say if Leo has FORL (feline oral resorptive lesions)?  Our last cat, Neely, was susceptible to it as well as our present cat, Carleton.  Here are two links for your reference: http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/Health_Information/toothresorption.cfm

Glad he did well with the surgery, will keep Leo in my thoughts for a full and happy recovery.

Hello,
Thanks for the reply! No the vet didn't mention the condition of which you spoke, but I can ask my sister in law if she can chat to our vet about it, how did/do your cats cope with them?

I would encourage you to find out if Leo has FORL from your vet.  We adopted our cats and some of their dental issues were present before they came to live with us.  Although the cause of FORL is unknown, inflammation and plaque attribute to it by stimulating the cells and eating away at the enamel of the tooth.  Proper home dental care along with veterinary prophylaxis are preventive measures.  Best of luck.
