we adopted a kitten that was going to be destroyed by it's owner... he's a happy independent sort, about 6 months old, loves to follow us around  and be right next to us but doesn't like to be touched and won't let us pick him up.  We've figured out how we'll catch him to get him to the vet (realize the clock is ticking before he'll start spaying) but are worried about how to handle the recovery process since he won't let us touch him.  Also, while we know the neutering is necessary so nothing to be done -- will the trauma of the procedure make him even more skittish and unlikely to ever let us touch him down the road??  Any advice or insight welcome.  Thanks!

I would suggest that you start using Feliway in your house to help him destress prior to the trip to the vet.  When you get him home, put him in a large crate overnight and let him sleep off the anesthsia.  He should be okay to be out and about the next day.  You might find that constant attention, a safe home, and steady food supply will help calm him and turn him into a love bug.  I adopted a cat at 9 weeks old. He's now 6 and still doesn't like to snuggle or be held, but I can pick him up long enough to put him in a carrier.

Is he an indoor only cat?

...thanks so much for taking the time to respond!  Just looked up Feliway, wasn't aware of it and will get some!

I think that if you work slowly with him that he'll come around. Sounds like he's not really had a lot of good, consistent care and love.

Most males don't need any particular care for neuter recovery. Feral males are released as soon as they recover from the anesthetic. He may be upset about it for a little while but in the end it will make him more content so he'll forgive you.
