If Bladder Blocked, Will a Cat Still Drink Water?

My male cat recently had two stays at the vets for a UTI. The first time he stayed for 3 nights, had a surgical catheter  to empty his bladder and was sent home with antibiotics and special food.  Two days later we were back at the vets because I was worried about the small amount of urine he was passing and the fact he had stopped drinking water. This time he stayed a week, was sent home with dry special food because he won't eat the can prescription food.  He seemed to be improving, but I noticed the last couple of days that once again he is making frequent trips to the litter box, very little is coming out, but what surprises me is that he is very eager to eat canned food (Not the prescription though), and he will drink plenty of water.

Its hard for me to gauge if he is using the litter box somewhat normally because we have multiple cats and its been an impossible task to keep the cats separated and I can't watch the littler box 24/7.

Tonight he ate and drank water, but he was also making some hissing noises at the other cats, so my question is, will a cat continue to drink water if their bladder is full? I am worried that he may be blocked again already (Just a week after coming home from the vets a week ago).

The hissing would indicate to me that something is not quite right with him still. Cats will drink water when their tummies are upset or they are nauseous.  I would get him to the vet and maybe even seek a second opinion, maybe from a cat only vet. You could also join the Yahoo group for FLUTD owners. There might even be a group on Facebook.

This condition is nerve wracking because you always think their bladder is full and they can't possibly be emptying it. As long as some urine is coming out it's ok even if it's not a lot. The problem is usually inflammation of the opening to the bladder. That's probably still swollen so little pee is coming out. If you are worried about the bladder you can press on his lower abdomen to see if that causes him discomfort. I would call the vet tomorrow a.m. and just run by to have the vet or a tech feel his bladder to assure it was empty. I made 4 trips to the vet just for that purpose because I was convinced the bladder was full. It wasn't. It's better to be safe.
