Hello all. Ok so yesterday my cat that i have had almost just a month, she was fine all morning and was playing and then she just got up went to her litter box had diarrhea and then started vomitting and then more diarrhea and vomiting. It lasted like 20ish mins i think. The diarrhea came to the point it was super watery and she couldnt make it to her litter box, so she was going on the floor. I ended up taking her to the vet and they said they didnt see anything that was unusually. They said her abdomen felt tender a little bit and they could tell she did not feel that great.
I didnt give her food or water at all last night after per vets orders. I also got medicine for her. Its a pill called amoxicillin i give her twice a day.
Now this morning, she drank some water, i gave her the meds and she ate a some of her food.she seems hungry, but i did not give her alot ididnt want vomitting again or anything.
When she pooped on the floor yesterday i did see some white things in her diarrhea but the vet said she cant determine if its worms until she does a fecal test.
Also, my cat is strictly indoors and we do have a dog but he doesnt have anything. So fleas or anything like that i dont think would be an issue. So im not sure how she could get worms or anything.
Im just wondering if anyone has ever had to deal with this before, or anything. Should i be super concerned about anything else?
Thanks.

...with the cats...
hi and welcome to TCS!

i'm so sorry your girl is having these symptoms.

may i ask -- how old is your cat? i'm asking because kittens can get into all sorts of things and sometimes eat them, and adult and senior cats have other common reasons for experiencing vomiting and diarrhea.

and, what type of cat food does your girl eat -- canned, dry, raw, home cooked? any new foods?

your girl having diarrhea, then vomiting, and again several times for about 20 minutes -- that sounds like some sort of gastro upset was going on.

i'd strongly suggest working with your vet to diagnose and treat the problem. it could possibly have been something kitty got into and ate (that she shouldn't have), then got it all out with the vomiting and diarrhea, but i would go ahead and have the fecal test done and work with your vet. the vet will be the one to properly diagnose what's going on.

with a gastro upset, vomiting and/or diarrhea, a cat's gastro system needs to kind of 'reset' itself.  something that our vet recommended for our two young girls is jar baby food, gerber or beechnut, stage 1 (pureed smooth), and the only ingredients are the meat (ham, turkey, chicken), water, and (beechnut has a little) cornstarch. this is like a 'liquid diet' for humans, but for cats -- very easy on the tummy, and easy to digest. you might try the jar baby food for 4 or 5 days for your girl. you might start out giving your girl smaller meals more often, then as she seems to be doing better you could try more normal amounts of food.

once her vomiting and diarrhea have subsided, and she's eating the jar baby food well and seems to be generally feeling better -- i'd say a minimum of 3 or 4 days but could be more like 5 or 6 days, you could then try finely mincing a very small amount of her regular canned cat food and mixing that into the jar baby food. once your girl is doing fine with that combination for a day or two, you could proceed to gradually increase the canned cat food while gradually decreasing the jar baby food.

your girl needs to eat. cats can develop hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease, which is very serious) in as little as 2 or 3 days, depending on their age, any medical conditions, and weight. i can totally understand your hesitation and not wanting your girl to continue to have vomiting/diarrhea. so whether you decide to work with her regular cat food or try the jar baby food, start out with smaller meals more often -- that will be easier on her gastro system.

two things you might discuss with your vet are a probiotic for your girl (a good probiotic can help to rebuild her 'good' gut flora), and possibly pepcid ac (to help calm her gastro system -- you'll need your vet to recommend a dosage). if pepcid ac is recommended by your vet, you don't necessarily have to pill your cat. you could try dissolving the pepcid ac dosage in a little warm water, then mixing it into the jar baby food -- see if she'll eat it that way (my cats do). i would make sure you discuss anything you want to try with your vet before trying it.

yes, i've had gastro issues with my cats. and as i said, i'd work with your vet to diagnose and treat the problem. this could be a relatively minor gastro upset, a reaction to a food/food ingredient, or possibly even pancreatitis -- and there are other possibilities, which is why the expertise of your vet is needed.

we're here for you, to help in any way(s) we're able to and for support. please let us know if you have any questions, and how your girl continues to be doing.

Also when i took her to the vet they ruled out gastro. So im not sure if she did get into something, idk. i havent seen anything that looked chewed or gotten into, but the trashcan lid had been open in the bathroom so idk if she got into that. Like i said i havent seen anything that she could have gotten into. But idk.

has your girl been eating the same dry cat food, since she's joined you/your family? no changes of brand or flavor?

ahhh, a kitten! my girls were into everything, chewed so many things when they were under one year old......actually, they still do, to some extent.

kittens can find the darndest things to chew on and eat! my girls are both intrepid hunters...they live to hunt...mostly bugs, any kind of bug. during last winter, they hunted and ate bugs that hitched a ride in on the firewood. after a short while, they both developed gastro upsets. there's very little chance of getting bugs away from my two...they see me coming, and they immediately eat the bug, with a look that says, 'uh oh, here she comes! she's gonna take our bug away from us...eat it, quick!'   i ended up storing my firewood in my enclosed porch, and just grabbing a piece for the wood stove as i need to.

may i ask -- did your vet do any tests, to rule out gastro issues? and, do you have any house plants? is she given any people food, little bits of anything?
