How long does it take for Metacam to kick in?

My 5year old neutered cat was diagnosed with a bacterial infection in his bladder. The vet sent him home with liquid Metacam. We finished his course of antibiotics but the smell still lingers and he still looks like he's straining to pee. Vet said he has very concentrated urine. So I've started including wet food in his diet and hes getting quite a bit of water so not sure what else to do....should i try a follow up with the vet or are there any other suggestions of what else i can do to help him out?

sounds like he still has a lot of inflammation that takes awhile to clear up. As long as the vet is certain the antibiotic worked, the inflammation takes about a week or so to let up. Poor baby!!

Metacam is a painkiller. What kind of antibiotic did he get? Was there crystal formation? If he's still straining, a follow-up visit would be a very good idea.

I would get him back to the vet for a recheck.  Better safe than sorry when it comes to urinary health issues.  I would ask for something other than metacam for pain, too.

As for the food, we feed mainly wet and I always add water to all of my kitties' bowls so that their food is the consistency of thick oatmeal. I want to make sure they're getting all the water they need to keep their urinary systems functioning well.

they gave him an injection of Convenia. They checked for crystals and he doesn't have them.

Convenia is a long-acting antibiotic shot. It lasts up to 60 days in the blood stream. Common side effects are increased lethargy and decreased appetite so make sure he keeps eating.  Since he's had the Convenia shot, no more antibiotics for awhile due to possible interactions.

Strong urine smell can be caused by concentrated urine, but also can be caused by some antibiotics.  As you've said, keep putting the water in his wet food and possibly increase his wet food serving amount and decrease the dry food you're feeding him.

There's a problem here with the medications your cat's been given - more than one problem.

First, these two drugs should never been given together........they are contraindicated for simultaneous administration in cats.

Here's a link to a post of mine that explains all of this......and, inside there is a link to another of my posts which you should also read - anyways, I'm sure you'll understand (or, post back):  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/277902/delayed-prolonged-vaccine-reaction#post_4052096    (in that case, the incompetent Vet also gave a third drug, also contraindicated)

Secondly, Metacam should never be given to a cat with urinary restriction issues. Metacam destroys kidney cells/tissue.....cat's livers cannot process it, so the kidneys are left to deal with it and it's nephrotoxic.

I would immediately stop the Metacam. I would also find a competent feline Veterinarian.....perhaps at a cat-only clinic.
