I have had a rough go the last month with my female senior cat Groucho! (she is 16, indoor cat) I began noticing spots of blood in her litter box and around my room. I took her to a vet that was near my house since I am new to this city and didn't have one I previously knew around here. Groucho was in a good mood, eating and drinking prior to this visit. They said she could have a UTI and would need blood work and an Xray. This would require a mild body sedative. I accepted.

After an hour I came back to pick up my cat, he gave her an antibiotic to treat for a UTI and sent me home with liquid form to give to her with a syringe every 12 hours for 7 days.  They would let me know the results tomorrow. She was in her crate and I took her home... Groucho became Cujo when I let her out of her crate. She was hissing, growling, snarling and attacking things that weren't there. (this is not her personality she is sweet and loving) I had to put her in the bathroom because she was getting extremely aggressive. She was delusional. I called the vet and asked what happened. They said she was a handful and resisted them when they tried to get a blood and urine sample, but they held her down and shaved her to retrieved it and everything was normal.... I let her out of the bathroom, she still had not calmed down, she peed on my roommates bed and just laid in it, she was scratching and biting so it was hard to even move her (she never does that) she also was walking weird. At 2:00 a.m. I decided to take Groucho to a 24 hour emergency vet about 20 mins away. I came to the conclusion in the car that her back end was sore and that the vet had put way to much pressure on her to retrieve the blood/urine. The 24 hour vet assessed her back and said she is very sore and tender. She gave her a shot of pain medication and sent me home with 4 shots to give her once a day.

I brought her home and she laid in her crate with the door open, wide eyed but not growling. A few hours later she still was sitting in her crate, it looked like she had not slept. Her eyes were still very dilated She also had peed in the crate and laid in it. I took her out and wiped her down with a damp towel (bathing her was not an option but I could life her without the scratching this time) she would now hiss and growl every 20 mins at nothing and I finally got her to lay on my bed. I called the first vet and told them she was in extreme pain and that they may have pushed to hard on her back end when restraining her, of course they denied this. I told them she has not eaten or drunken since. I went to the vet and got special wet food and got the results. She was diagnosed with Stage 2 kidney disease and a UTI. The plan was to continue with the antibiotics and eventually switch her food to prescription food once she started eating. I went home with the wet food and tried to feed it to her and she was having non of that. It had been 24 hours since the first pain med shot, she was still hissing here and there but not anything like before. I gave her the shot of pain med. She began foaming at the mouth. I immediately took her back to the 24 hour emergency vet. This time it was a different doctor, he said to stop giving her the pain meds, he gave her an anti-nausea medicine and fluids for dehydration. (at this point I am up to $1100.00 for everything so far) This helped a lot. She was able to fall asleep and she always liked to steal water from my glass by my bed so I filled it up and put it on the floor. I noticed her taking sips late in the night of it and it was a great sign I was super stoked. She also started eating one or two cat treats and this started her appetite up again. I gave her wet food at first so she wouldn't become dehydrated again, dry food was always available in her dish. She actually doesn't really eat wet food but she did this time.

I decided to wait until she had her appetite fully back and her UTI meds done before changing her food. I waited about two or so weeks. She was eating great was back to her normal self. It was super emotional because I thought she was traumatized by the first vet and her mind would never be the same again, but she was back to normal...until...I came home and there was blood everywhere. There were drops throughout the whole house upstairs and down along with urine. I called the 24 hour vet and he gave me more UTI antibiotics, once I gave her a dose the next day there was no more blood. I have mixed her new food (Hills prescription Diet Kidney Care Dry Food Chicken) with her old food and she is eating it and she is also drinking (she didn't loose appetite during this bleeding situation). She also is happy and hanging around the house like normal...

I has been two days and I have noticed she is not having bowel movements. I am up to over $1200 so I have read online to try 100% pure pumpkin which can help for diarrhea and constipation which I am going to try today to see if it helps. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? I haven't and its been rough and hard and I want her to be better and have a great quality of life. Has anyone used this cat food before? Has it caused constipation? My cat is picky eater, doesn't eat human food and rarely wet food, I though of syringing the pumpkin that's mixed with warm water? She is used to a syringe as she is still on the UTI medicine. ITs a quick 5 second shot in the side of the mouth and she doesn't seem mad forgets about it after she walks around for a bit. Anyone Syringed pumpkin before??

Any comments welcome. Thank you!

I have no experience of pumpkin but I have used Catlax with benefit over many years for my cats who have been constipated.  It is a cat palatable mixture containing paraffin oil and most online vets sell it.

I am not a vet but a human doctor and any advice that I give about cats should be checked with a vet.  My poor Rupert, who died of renal failure became very constipated and I had to manually relieve him and constipation is, I understand, a complication that may make the UTI worse.  Certainly it does in humans.

Catlax can be given on the paw for the cat to lick off.  Some cats take it from your finger.   However if the constipation persists you should discuss relief of it with your vet.

Incidentally make sure that Groucho continues to drink and contact the vet if she doesn't.   The first renal function to be lost with renal failure is the kidney's capacity to concentrate the urine.  This means that the only way that the cat can maintain her internal environment is to increase her fluid intake so as to pass large quantities of dilute urine.  That is why she has increased her fluid intake and is drinking from your glass.  My Siamese cat, Rupert, with kidney failure, used to do this regularly until he died in December 2015.  You should also give her one of the Prescription Diet Care, Kidney, moist foods, Hills make one of these.  You should also avoid dry foods as most cats are able to have a fluid intake from their food..

With best wishes,

Geoffrey

Thanks so much for the information I just gave her some pumpkin and if that doesn't work I'll ask my vet about what u recommend , I'm sorry to hear your poor cat passed away of renal failure, it's definitely not pleasant to see that happen . I'm keeping the glass of water there it's a lot easier to monitor what she drinks, she also has a bowl of water too so far she's drinking so that's good :) I'll see how she does tonight and if no stool by tmr I'll call the vet again ! Thanks again for ur reply much appreciated !

Pumpkin is working GREAT she has gone #2 a little bit twice, so I am stoked! I'll keep monitoring, just gave her a little 100% pure pumpkin mixed with warm water in a syringe so it was saucy not watery. She didn't hate the taste but wouldn't eat it on her own. :)
