My cat is only 1 year old and just recently he developed some sort of white thing on his eye ball and his eye is very red and inflamed. I took him to the vet and they said it could be ulcerative keratosis but they didn't seem to be very familiar with it. They did a dye test and basically scraped the white stuff off the surface and gave me a topical anti biotic for his eye and told me to come back if it didn't go away. The white stuff has come back and the eye is still very inflamed. He doesn't seem to be in pain but he is definitely walking around with that eye closed or squinty. Anybody know anything about this or what I should do?? The picture is today, 9 days after vet visit.

After 9 days, the eye should have cleared up.

When they did the 'eye scraping' did they send out the sample to be tested? PCR test? OR only did an in-house microscopic exam?

I've only had cats with conjuctivitis, so it is not the same, but if this Vet does not know about eye issues, then I'd get a second opinion, from another Vet.

And if you can afford to, even seeing a cat eye specialist, although expensive, might be better at finding the proper answers.

Take him back to original Vet first, and see what they say, or phone them up, and explain the details, and ask about further meds or treatment.

It looks like something related to Herpes, or even Rodent Ulcers,...but because it's the eye, then I'd want my Vets to be sure, to know what they are treating.

Good Luck with your guy.

Post an update, when you can.

Hey there, I took my kitty 3 times to three different vets, and though I suspected an eye ulcer (scarring of the eyeball)from the beginning, the first two vets were unable to diagnose him correctly...only the third one confirmed my suspicion... however, all three vets prescribed the wrong meds, which ended up making matters worse very fast every single time. Needless to say how desperate and upset and frustrated I was, and how stressed and miserable Toby was, plus he hates going to the vet.... I’m no vet, however at this point after long nights researching and inquiring about this problem, I am home-treating my cat and I do strongly believe I know what’s best for him (and I love him more than anything!) I am saying this because I believe sometimes you have to go with your guts in certain situations... So, looking at the photo, the inflammation can likely be pink eye or conjunctivitis and from my research you can clear the infection with some black tea, I know, it sounds crazy, but this did help with the inflammation in my kitty’s eye, it didn’t treat the ulcer but made matters a bit better. You basically bring water to boil, steep in a black tea bag, let it cool to room temperature and then very gently wipe off infected eye with a cotton ball. Do not reuse the cotton ball as you can push the infection back into the eye, basically wipe once and throw away, and use another cotton ball if needed. Do this a couple of times a day and DO NOT wipe off healthy eye with the same cotton pad, you want to keep the infection away from healthy eye as much as possible. I am also treating my cat with Teramicin, which has tetracycline and is used in eye infections/eye ulcer, which the vets didn’t even hear of (I can’t even begin to say how I’m likely never trusting a vet again, unfortunately). This treatment slowly but surely seems to work, it’s taking a while but I believe this is the right course for him. Anyway, I highly recommend the black tea treatment. Do let us know how it goes.
