Should I shave my cat?

Some of my family members are advocating to shave my Turkish Angora, Ruby due to the amount of shedding... they said that if we shave her then although she will still shed, she will shed much shorter hairs so that it won't bother us as much. They want to shave her now and if she doesn't seem to mind it, shave her again. Thoughts?

I'd personally not do this. Unfortunately cats shed, even the short haired ones. Have you tried a cat size furminator? Do you brush her daily?

Being somewhat of a neat freak, I do vacuum every 1-2 days and catch Mr. Sparky's favorite napping spots with the furniture brush. He has medium long hair and with daily brushing, there is very little hair around the house. I've done this for years with my dogs so basically this is just a good habit I've gotten into. Short hair can weave itself into fabric just as quickly as long hair.

I wouldn't do it unless there is a problem grooming your cat or the cat is matted beyond your grooming skills. Greypaws pointed out there are ways to remove the loose hair, such as the furminator, but even combing or brushing daily will help.

I see no point in having a long hair breed cat and shave her bald.

Why not guarding an Sfinx one instead? That breed is hairless anyway.
