I rescued my kitten from the SPCA and I was told she was a domestic medium hair, as time has went on.. She seems to be growing her hair even longer!. I am just interested to know what you all think because anyone that meets my sweet baby, asks me if she is Maine Coon. I am aware that they get huge and am interested to know if anyone does for sure think she is this breed. She does act much like a canine, loves to play fetch and has a favorite toy (a ball) which apparently is a characteristic of this breed. She is quite tiny but she is only 5 months. Her paws also appear to be getting substantially bigger. Her ears aren t huge, but she does have the long hair tuffs inside her ears. Thank you for all your help!

At this point it is hard to say. The tufts in the ears are called "furnishings" and many cats have those. Maine Coons may or may not have tufts at the ENDS of their ears like a lynx or bobcat. Maine Coons don't stop growing until they are 3 to 4 years old unlike other breeds which are fully grown by 1 year or so. Your baby does look like she has a nice ruff and the big feet also point towards Maine Coon. She should have bushy tail, longer hair on the main part of her body with shorter but still longish hair across the shoulders and hips, big pantaloons, longish hair between the toes, the legs are relatively short, this is not a long-legged cat. Maine Coons also have a break in their nose, you can see this in profile, they do NOT have Roman noses. Most of these signs won't show up until your kitty is at least a year old so just enjoy her the way she is now and don't worry about what breed she is. Other longhaired cats like this are Siberian and Norwegian Forest Cat.

Oh he's a BIG boy alright and he does appear to have a break in his nose. From what I can see he does not have enough hair and especially no ruff to be a Maine Coon, perhaps a mix with that size and weight. Perhaps a better picture showing all of him would help, maybe he's got more hair than I can see. Does he have long hair between his toes?

I have a red Maine Coon boy, 8 1/2 years old, so he is fully grown, but weighs only 13 lbs. although he feels heavier.

the longest hair is across his middle, it's a little shorter on the shoulders and haunches and of course he has a big ruff which is like a lion's. Here you can see his bushy tail and big ruff, he does not have ear tufts but plenty of ear furnishings.

Big paws and you can see the break in his nose, the nose goes down between the eyes and then outwards.

Maine Coons' fur does not usually tangle like Persians' do but they do need to be brushed and combed, I take the wire brush and brush him backwards to get all the loose fur out from underneath and then brush it down every two or three days. If I don't then I will find clumps of hair lying around. Thank goodness he loves to be brushed, even turns over so I can brush his belly and out from under his pits.

Maine Coons also have sort of a "wild" look to their faces no matter what color they are or what markings they have. This one is a Cameo Classic Tabby as he has hardly any markings showing, just pale ones on his face and one faint stripe across all four paws. Nevertheless, even with those girly-colors he still looks "wild" although he is just a big fluffy live teddybear.

Hmm. I don't think Big Boy's got a ruff. I'll look when he comes out of hiding this evening.

Yes, that's one thing they all have, a ruff, even the girls, although not as big, and hair between the toes. They come from cold places and need the fur to survive in the cold. Some of them will sit on their tails to keep warm underneath and the big paws help them to walk on top of the snow like snow shoes. Let's see a good pic of your big boy. At this time of day (3:30 pm) all of mine are still sleeping.

Big Boy is a tad psycho, I think. He hides all day, terrified of everything. I don't know where he's hiding often. Unlike every other cat I've ever had, he doesn't like to come out in the daytime and sun himself or find a favorite perch on a chair. Instead he stuffs himself, I mean really stuffs himself, into a tiny cranny somewhere.

Fortunately, I was able to get him to the vet's a couple of times and he appears to have a clean bill of health so far. He's far and away the strongest of my cats. Getting him into the carrier was this cartoon scene of me rasslin' him and pulling him from out behind something. He never bites or scratches me, which is a good thing.

He generally comes out at night, and sits in bed with me, then sleeps at the head or the foot of the bed. If I sleep in on a Saturday or Sunday, he usually sleeps with me. He loves to be petted and gives billy-goat head-butts.

He's a handsome boy and very large but no Maine Coon. His fur is not long enough, no ruff. He might have some Maine Coon somewhere in his ancestors which made him so big but that's about it, sorry. The other two large breeds also are not candidates for his ancestry. Just enjoy your big boy.

Regarding his never coming out during daylight hours: don't worry about it, that's just how some cats are. I've got one that's a scardy cat, absolutely terrified by strangers and friendly to me only when he needs to be fed. For me to pet him I have to trap him in a room where there is no place to hide and then he acts as if I were going to beat him. Once I scoop him up in my arms he purrs his head off and can't get enough petting but as soon as he can he runs off, oh well.. He likes to sleep in the sun on the patio but as soon as he senses that I am on he patio he runs for cover.

I agree, and his personality matches the cat you describe. Taking BB to the vet is like one of those cartoons where the scaredy cat runs.

BB is getting a little less shy, bit by bit.

Maybe he and the other four cats will learn to get along.
