My new girl was in a high-kill shelter in TN, then brought up to New York about 10 days ago, was in a foster home for a day, and then in the PetSmart where I got her for a few days before I brought her home. She's had some sneezes, but now mostly this weird shivery sneeze noise the past day or two. And just now she was sniffing something I had and a large drop of watery material dripped onto my hand...so I think she may have a runny nose.

I set up her initial vet appointment for the 31st. Do you think this is something that I should try to get looked at sooner?

Do you know if she's up to date on vaccinations? Certain viruses can cause sneezing in cats and she may have picked something up from other cats in the shelter, especially if they were closely packed together in kennels. Plus, as you mentioned, she's been to a foster home and Petsmart as well (with potential exposure to other cats in both these places). It's good that you've scheduled a vet appointment, but since she's new to your household and has been sneezing often, it might be a good idea to have her seen sooner than the 31st. It could be allergies to a certain kind of pollen, especially if there's a plant growing/blooming where you live that wasn't common in Tennessee. But it could also be a respiratory infection or something of the sort and it's hard to tell the difference. Hope she feels better soon!

Thanks! She is up to date on vaccines - she had them all in TN earlier this month. The only thing is she only had one distempter, so probably will need the booster when she goes to the vet. She also tested negative for FIV/FeLV.

That's good! Since she tested negative for FIV/FeLV and is up-to-date on vaccines, it could easily be allergies or a kitty cold/respiratory infection. You could always give the clinic a call and describe her symptoms, perhaps see if they feel she should be seen sooner.

Congratulations on your new kitty!  She's been through a lot in a short period of time, so it's not surprising that she's got a runny nose and sneezing.  Most likely, she's coming down with an upper respiratory infection.  If it was me, I'd get her into the vet ASAP to nip it in the bud and make sure it doesn't develop into anything more serious.

Runny nose and sneezing are typically the sign of an upper respiratory infection in my experience with my two cats. I might go ahead and take her a little earlier to the vet, and they can at least help nip it in the bud. A little medicine goes a long way for kitty colds, and I wouldn't want to chance it being something else or getting more serious.

Congrats on the new family member!
