What is your favorite cat litter? I have yet to find one I am totally happy with. Currently using Fresh Step with Febreze, which is good at controlling odor but still too dusty and I can smell its scent on my cats. I liked Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat multi-cat because it was nearly dust free, but awful at controlling odor. Anyone found a happy medium?

Tidy Cats 24/7 Performance Clumping Litter. I love it. Doesn't clump as tight as Dr. Elseys but it clumps well is very good with odors and has a light scent so not overpowering also little dust.

A lot of people like the crystals.  Chemically neutral (silica), dust free, great odor control, more $$$ but it lasts a long time.  You scoop the poop and stir where there is urine as the crystals absorb all the liquid.

My 2 favorites are Tidy Cats and Fresh Step Extreme. I do also like the Dr Elsey's but I hate that it's in a bag. It's hard to move around and if it's left anywhere that the cats can get to it, they use the bag as a scratching post and the litter goes everywhere. I haven't bought it in a while but if I do again, I will have to transfer it to a Tidy Cats pail that I saved.

I can't remember if it was a pine or cedar pellet litter (though I swear it was cedar) nor the brand, but that is what I preferred despite it being a pain to sift. Grimmy used to be great with it, and the last time I tried using the bit I had left over, she maybe went in the box once. I didn't want her to start peeing on the upstairs carpeting so I ditched it, and now either use Special Kitty Multiple Cat Clumping Cat Litter. I prefer the unscented but I haven't found it sold larger than 14lbs, I think. The scented 40lbs is very cost effective.

(didn't even know it was a walmart brand until i got sidetracked and found a random link from 2009 on this site. blarggles.)

I have yet to find a happy medium. Maybe mixing a bit of grain litter with pellet litter will work? I am thinking about trying that.

Special Kitty Multiple Cat Clumping Cat Litter Unscented +1.  It's simple, it's cheap, and effective.  It's dusty without a doubt, that's what makes clumping litter clump - you'll never be dust free with a clumping litter.

Walmart Canada sells the 40lbs box (CDN$10.98 per box) - not sure why Walmart US doesn't.

They do sell several types of Dr. Elsey's in a 20-lb box. But that's a lot of litter to buy at one time!

We've used SoPhresh from Petco/Drs.Foster&Smith for yonks.  It's everything we need in a litter, at a good price, and now we have it delivered to our door.

I use pine pellets with an allpineproducts sifting litter box.  I could not be happier with the way it absorbs odors and is easy to clean.  The urine breaks down the pine pellets into saw dust which fall into the receptacle under the sifter section.  Once a week I dump, but daily scoop poop.  I could not be happier.  It is super economical when you buy horse bedding for $5.99 a bag for 40 pounds bags at Tractor Supply.

I use the Arm & Hammer Multi Cat Clump and Seal.  Excellent clumping, no smell and I haven't had any issues with dust using this.

I just recently switched to clumping litter, soon after adopting kittens in October.  Before that I was using the non clumping Tidy Cat, and that's only because my rainbow baby, Sandra refused all clumping litters.  She was my precious angel, but she was very stubborn and set in her ways!

The kittens took to the clumping litter right away and my two adult boys didn't mind the change at all.

It could simply be the item isn't that high in demand around where I live. I guess it's not much an issue if it can be ordered online.

I use Dr. Elsey's Premium Non Scented Clumping litter with some Marineland Black Diamond Premium Activated Carbon mixed in. This carbon is made for aquariums but does a great job of absorbing odors! I discovered this idea while reading through the comments posted on Amazon for Dr. Elsey's litter.

Welcome to TheCatSite @junoandnori  !
The cat litter I like most is Vet's Best 30-day cat litter.  I don't actually use it for 30 days, but from what I've experienced, you very well could.  Urine will be absorbed by the pink clay litter and will "disappear".  There are no clumps and I've had absolutely zero odor.  The feces can be scooped like usual.  It is lightweight and I think my cat finds it easy to dig and cover, (I have high side litter boxes).  Although I really believe the litter could easily do a good job for 30 days, I end up changing it sooner because I wonder if Speedy can smell the urine even though I cannot.  I just like the weight of it mostly.  I have mixed it with clumping litters like Cat's Pride and that works well for me, too.   It kind of acts as an absorbing medium when I use it like that.  That being said, I cannot get it all the time as I work in a closeout store and it is not available all the time.  When I see it, I tend to get some extras.

This is a great site and we  send you a warm welcome!!
from, Marianne (@raysmyheart  ) and Speedy!

Our favorite litter is World's Best Flushable Clumping Litter. It keeps odor down long enough for one of us to remove the offending wastes. We have a container we transport the clumps to the toilet in, flush it, wash the container and ready for the next installment.

Thanks for all the recommendations! Will try one of these with my next litter purchase. Unfortunately, the corn-based and walnut-based ones are out of the question, as my older cat thinks she can eat them

My kittens love the EverClean fresh litter we use. It clumps super well, it's not dusty at all and it completely masks any bad scents, and leaves them smelling all clean and fresh when they've used the tray.

CDN$1.31 per pound!?  ouch!   I don't think I could ever justify paying CDN$3,000/year on cat litter (48.5lbs/week)
