Hello, i'm new here. I am new to the cat world, my girlfriend has a cat whos never had Cat nip. Yesteday i bought a dried catnip bag... put the catnip in a foam plate .. but the cat just smelled it and walked away, tried rubing a bit on his head but nothing. He will not eat it.

Now, at one point he was a super playful (running around, the apartment, climbin on sofas.) Don't know if this was the cat nip or not...

The cat has never tasted / try cat nip.. by the looks of it he is not into

Please, any suggestions, advice, on how to approach this with my cat?

All help is appreciated fellas! Have a great day

BTW this site rocks!

A certain percentage of cats have absolutely no reaction to catnip. And sometimes it makes cats very excited, while other cats just get very happy and relaxed.

Some cats who don't respond to catnip will sometimes respond to valerian root.

My cat does not react to cat nip but does to both valerian and silvervine. I've found quite a few shops on Etsy which make and sell cat toys with either valerian or silvervine.

My cat does not have the cat nip gene either; he's the first cat I've ever come across who doesn't.  Neither does he react to valerian but other cats I know highly recommend it

But, all is not lost, as he does show interest in the silvervine matatabi twigs I got from Ebay.  I've just sent off for some silvervine matatabi leaves and fruit pods to see if they have more impact

I also heard on the grapevine that cats are stimulated by tartarian honeysuckle, however, this remains untested by me and my cat

I forgot to mention honeysuckle...thanks for the reminder Brian007 Brian007 ! Honeysuckle worked for my girl in addition to valerian and silvervine. Again, I found toys with honeysuckle on Etsy!

@Thecatwhisker

My three trial silvervine matatabi fruits, powder, and leaves turned up today
 I opened them in turn and the leaves are the hands down winner, followed by the powder, twigs (that I already had), and lastly fruits.

Dudley's busy rolling in a few leaves, has been zooming up & down my corridor, jumping in & out of the empty bath (a favourite pastime), batting balls, and crab-pouncing

He doesn't seem quite as ecstatic as other cats on catnip but is still really enjoying himself
  I'm glad that I've found him a pick-me-up at last

I hope this information helps.  I plan to investigate honeysuckle next and will report back.....
