I wouldn't wear that neckline, I'd look terrible. It looked OK on her although I wouldn't really want it to catch on.

Well to be fair after 8 year of Michelle's people of Walmart look it was refreshing.
From Elle magazine:

BEST LOOKS:  MICHELLE OBAMA    http://www.elle.com/fashion/celebrity-style/news/g8467/michelle-obama-style/

Opening sentence: "When Michelle Obama became the First Lady of the United States in 2008, she immediately gained the fashion community's vote for her all-American style."

Article includes over 100 photographs of Michelle Obama showing her impeccable fashion sense.

From: Harper's Bazaar:

DESIGNERS WRITE THANK YOU LETTERS TO FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA

"I am so honored to have dressed you and love what you have done for American fashion."

It seems the fashion industry itself thinks quite highly of the outfits Michelle Obama wears.

Melania Trump does look nice in that outfit and hopefully, the collar did keep her warm.  I'm with @Willowy  though.  That collar is not for everyone.

You definitely need a long neck for the collar. I loved it, I have to say. Her other choice on a cold day would have been a scarf of some kind. I think I'm getting to like Melania.

What a crude thing to say. The Obama's are a class act!!
Seems like we are all a tad testy today & maybe saying things we shouldn't. Myself included. Even an innocuous thread like this brings forth daft comments. (Not yours Muffy.)

I think she has a unique style - very architectural.  I usually quite enjoy what she's wearing.  I appreciate the fashion risks that Michelle takes too - her wardrobe is truly incredible.  They're both beautiful.

Well I guess my comment was also daft. I just thought her comment was uncalled for.

I always thought Michelle Obama looked nice. HOWEVER the person who did her hair messed up bad. Big event and her hair was falling down in the back. Melania looked GREAT.

This is contrary to my politics, but I thought Melania's day dress was elegant and the ball gown striking. Ivanka's gown was beautiful, too, and I loved the way her hair was done. It really will be refreshing to have some fashion icons in the White House.

But I never cared much for Michelle Obama's clothes. Her first inaugural gown looked like an old chenille bedspread from the '50s. I guess because of who she was, fashion mags fawned over her wardrobe, but it never spoke to me.

Fashion is outside of politics.  :)

I thought Michelle's first gown was classic Hollywood glamour.

I did, too.   I remember thinking how luscious it looked and how beautiful she looked in it.   Of course, now that it's been compared to a 50s style chenille bedspread, I will probably never think of the material the same way again.
