Hello, well I guess the prison I live by is some sort of Mecca for cats. I have been able to find homes for 3 now but I was wondering if anyone could give me their opinion on my newest foundling.. he looks very much like a Maine Coon Mix but I'd love your opinion. He definitely is the friendliest stray I've ever found. He let me pet him almost instantly and now has claimed a bean bag my kids left out on the porch as his permanent napping spot. He's such a big, fluffy sweetheart. There seems to be a small community of these barn cats living around the Prison next door that has been here since the early 1900's. So, what do you think? Possibly some sort of wild Maine Coon Mix or perhaps just a colony of domestic long haired tabbies? I have more photos if it would be helpful. Thank You! -Jez

The Maine Coon is a wonderful old breed and is North Americas naturally occurring long hair breed that dates back to colonial times. It is entirely possible that your little one is a mix of Maine Coon and local long hairs or naturally has the characteristics with no link to a recognized purebred heritage. It certainly looks like, from this photo, that there is more of a square shape to the face and chin that you would expect with Maine Coon. You don't mention size but that is another characteristic that can define the breed as they tend to be on the larger side.

I would say that you can probably safely call him a Maine Coon mix.
