Misty (18 years old) was given a Convenia injection for her first UTI. Urine looked clear after one week but was bloody again after injection wore off. Now, she has been given Baytril liquid. When I give this to her, she immediately gags and spits it back up. I explained this to vet's office but the assured me enough of the med stays in her system.

Any advice on giving Baytril where it won't cause a gag reflex? Would it be ok to put the liquid inside an empty gel capsule and pill her? AMS FIRST IN POST

Are you slowly squirting the liquid into her mouth or doing one big squirt and emptying the entire dose into the mouth? One big squirt will cause gagging. Squirt little amounts into your cat's mouth and give her few second to breath in between. You can also ask the vet if the medicine can be compounded with a pet-friendly flavor like chicken or tuna.

The Convenia doesn't wear off after a week. The medicine itself says in the body for up to 2 months, sometimes longer, and may cause adverse reactions in cats. http://catinfo.org/convenia-worth-the-risk/ It's not a general antbiotic either. It's specifically for skin infections, not for urinary issues.

Cat had Convenient twice in earlier years with no problems. I pray this time won't harm her. I did sqirt Baytril dose all at once and will try slower. Thank you

There are a lot of anti-convenia people here in part because it does stay in the system and if the cat has a bad reaction there is no reverser drug, but many many cats get convenia without bad reactions, the vast majority.

Liquid baytril is nasty, very hard to give. An alternative is liquid or pill clavamox if your cats bacteria is sensitive to it, not nearly as bad tasting.
