recently i got a kitten that was two months old at my local animal shelter. I was playing with her tonight and noticed a odd rash or scab on the left side of her south. the hair seems to be also scabbing off on the area. if anyone knows what this could be i could use the help. should i take her to the vet within the next day or should i get a cream treatment as an easy fix? does it look like something that could be an emergency?

Hi!

It does not appear to be an emergency, and i would contact your shelter and find out what their post adoption medical policy is.  Some shelters will cover things but rarely if you use your own vet.

Whenever you get scabs and hair loss in a shelter cat one has to suspect ringworm, a fungal infection that while not dangerous is unsightly, and contagious to other cats and mildly so to people.  In people it shows up as a roundish red welt on the skin.  Don't panic.  Too many people panic over ringworm and treat their home like its been invaded by aliens  It goes away in time without treatment, but treatment is still preferred as it resolves faster, oral terbinifine and lime dips being 2 good treatments.

Your kitten may not have RW.  Regardless she needs a vet to diagnose, sometimes by woods lamp (RW spores sometimes glow under it) but with certainty by growing a culture.  Most vets will start treatment if they suspect RW as a culture can take 10 days for results.

Again contact your shelter and/or your vet.

It could also be food allergy or feline acne. Definitely need to get her to the vet and have it checked out.

Hi. My cat has a similar scab. One in the same spot, one on her neck and one on her leg a bunch around her ears. I took her and her brother to the vet and they said it's ringworm. We've been on treatment for 10 days and they have been isolated as well. My kitties also came from a shelter around Christmas time and I just found out last week what it was.
