Hi all,

I took in an active 9 month old orange tabby male about a month ago. He was roaming around outside for a couple of months prior to that and he was pretty slender when we first got him. He is not a picky eater and loves to eat every cat food so far, but he especially loves anything canned.

I used to have a female calico cat when I was growing up. She loved wet food but would always throw it up immediately, so we fed her only dry food and she did well and lived a long time on that. Based on that experience I always thought wet food was not very good for their digestive systems and dry food is better. This was about 10 years ago and no one was talking about food quality, so she was getting regular stuff like Fancy Feast and Purina.

Anywho, fast forward to this cat. I bought a big bag of Purina Pro plan Chicken and Rice dry food thinking that dry food is better and I was only feeding him that up until about a week ago. He was eating way more than the bag recommends (acting like he was starving when it was gone) and has gained at least a pound. He's a pretty good weight right now but I was worried he was eating too much.

I came across something online about male cats needing more water and that dry food only is a very bad idea. So I have spent the past few day researching on best cat foods, which of course led to more info about all the bad ingredients in the grocery store brand foods and dry food is just carbs and fillers, etc.

I have tried to narrow it down to canned foods that are high quality but still a good value in terms of cost. My thought right now is to put him on the Wellness Complete Health canned food because it comes in 12.5oz cans which are much less expensive than the smaller sizes. I did buy a couple of the 3oz for him to try out and he ate everything. I would be buying a case from somewhere like Chewy or Amazon.

I was wondering if anyone does an all wet diet using those large cans for just one cat? It says on their website that 1/2 can per day is good for 6-8lb cat. I was thinking I could split the can into quarters and feed him 1/4 can morning and 1/4 can night with a little bit of the Purina dry (since I still have a huge bag) during the day.

Is splitting that big can into quarters going to be a huge messy pain? Does anyone have issues with the big cans being much worse quality than the smaller cans?

I would appreciate any advice :)

Excellent job doing your research about male cats and dry food. Indeed, male cats can and do often block on a kibble only diet, so you're doing all the right things! I can't really comment on feeding just one cat, because I have 10 (lol) but you shouldn't have any issues splitting a large can. Some cats just don't like wet food cold, but you can add some warm water to it if that happens. Wellness is decent food and it comes in large cans, so that is really cost effective. In general most cats need around 20-22/cal per pound of weight, so if you look at the Wellness cans and figure out how many calories he needs to eat, you should be good.

I also have just 1 male cat. I feed him 3 oz
Wet in mornings and 3 oz late afternoon or early evening. Then he gets 1 oz dry as bedtime snack. He does great on this regimen and I add 1 or 2 tbs water on top of wet food . That is all the water he drinks, but seems to be well hydrated with a shiny coat and lots of energy.
