My cats like Stella & Chewy's freeze dried turkey but I notice bone pieces which are quite large. After eating they will make hacking/ coughing noises . Any suggestions for a brand more finely ground? Thanks.

Strange, I also feed S&C freeze dried raw, Tummy Ticklin' Turkey and fortunately have never had a problem with large bone pieces.  Did you contact their customer service dept.?

Yes and we received a coupon for a bag but it had the same effect on the cats. The bone pieces seem to be on the large size.

I'm glad you contacted them but sorry to hear about the bone pieces.  I guess I'm lucky that never happened to us..

It might not be the bone. Could it be the amount of water you are adding? I used to add water to my cats' ground meat, thinking it would be healthy, and they would cough after every meal. I went to the vet and googled about it and everything, couldn't figure out why. Then I stopped adding water when I was no longer feeding ground and they stopped coughing. then I fed them ground meat without added water and they did not cough. Then I gave them ground with lots of water again and they coughed after eating again.

It was only then that I realized that the fact that I was making their food soupy was causing them to cough :(

S&C is SUPER boney. I always crush up the little balls with my fingers and pick the large bone pieces out. The duck duck goose is by far the worst.

Or the lack of water. Most freeze dried foods are supposed to be rehdyrated in water before serving but some cats will only eat it dry. The dry texture might be a bit hard to swallow therefore causing coughing afterwards.

I use water and make sure the pieces are moist. Cats like the food but I hate that I have to check it for bones before feeding them. There was no problem with the frozen Primal or Radcat but I prefer feeding the freeze dried for now--without bones to choke them.

Fresh is Best also makes freeze dried raw. They use human grade bone meal, MCHC calcium so you won't find pieces of bone in the food. It's only available through their website, however.
