I have bought the absolute largest litterbox I could find.  And it's not big enough.

The boys walk in, turn around and do their business.  Shadow walks in, stops as soon as she's in, does her business and then turns around to leave.

I don't know why she doesn't turn around to see what might be coming up from behind instead of facing the corner.  And I don't know why she can't walk in far enough to not miss the edge.  She has a good foot between her nose and the back of the litter box, if she scooted in 3 more inches, she wouldn't be peeing over the edge.

We've put down a couple of mats (primary catcher and emergency second layer) that are supposed to be used to clean off their paws when they walk out.  But it's tiring as heck to wash the rubber mat every single day and hope I don't spill while carrying it to the sink.  The bathrooms are so tiny that I can't put the litterbox next to the sink.

Ironically, it's only been recently that I found out about this.  I was always mopping up urine every time I dumped the used litter when I could keep the box in the bathroom, but I thought it was an occasional miss, not a constant thing.  Then it had to be moved (last place) and she ruined the carpet (the smell got into the padding).  This place we bought the mats but the box is very much in the open and now we see why there's misses and how often those misses are.

So yeah.  The largest one I can find is not big enough.  Ideas for something larger?  I'm thinking it has to be big enough that I can keep the litter at only one end, so that she doesn't still hang her butt over the edge by walking just barely in.

Covered litterboxes are not an option, the few times we've tried them all the cats have revolted by going outside the box (even with daily cleaning, I guess they don't like the trapped smell).

Hi arouetta,

I got a feeling why they prefer the sides to do their business because the side walls have more of their pee smell. My boy does the same too. I've changed his box to a bigger one since he has grown bigger and longer. But he likes to pee very close to the sides and leave the center alone :lol3:

I have four large mats around his litter box to catch the litter. He likes to jump out and the litter just follow through and land on the mat and some follow him around the house. On the mat I called it 'Milky Way' as the litter are scattered all over the mat.

I've just bought another litter box for him and this one is bigger than the current one which I'll have it changed when I wash his litter box at the end of the month.

All your cats using one litter box or do you have multiple litter boxes?

I do not use covered litter box. It's just those storage containers with low walls that I'm using for the litter box.

Unfortunately due to spacing considerations I only have room for one box and that's in the dining room. Thank goodness we don't eat at the table.

The places where I could fit more than one in, they chose to do most of their business in one box and rarely used the rest. I guess they don't mind sharing.

Then you have to clear it more often before it gets piled up. They don't like dirty boxes. A little more work for you but what's a little more love for them eh? [emoji]128149[/emoji]

I had to resort to buying a plastic toddler pool which is smaller than a kiddie pool, cutting out part of the front and using that as a litter box. It won't hide well in the dining room but it will probably work. My cat would walk in a regular litter box but not far enough and would start peeing her butt unfortinately was still outside the box. The pool idea took care of that.
