Can anyone point me in the direction of a recommended food list for CRF kitties?
Casper (who will be 16 early May) was diagnosed today, seems like Stage 2 but on the low side, so I'd like to nip it in the bud as much as we can.

I already know about the two major websites to gather info from and I have a blogger friend who's cat was diagnosed recently that is sending me info on the foods she now feeds him.

Any other info which you think is helpful is very appreciated!

I'm having his full workup sent to me later today but the vet mentioned his urine is quite diluted, Creotine was at 2.4 and B1 at 39.  Can't find info on B1 levels yet.

He is drinking and eating fairly ok - better than he did before his diabetes diagnosis, which he is still in remission from, thankfully.  I would like to find a good water fountain for him, even though he likes water I think keeping it moving will be healthier. We put out fresh water 2x a day (or more if home) but it does get kind of yicky after a few hours due to him dropping food in it, household dust, etc.

EDIT: He throws up pretty frequently.  Sometimes, it can be daily for days in a row and other times, a couple of weeks will go by with no incident. It stopped when he was being treated w/insulin and, started up again once he was in remission.  I'm assuming now it could be at least sometimes due to nausea?

This is the "bible" for CKD cats.

If you have a FB join this group, they also have a good list of recommended foods. Remember, you want high protein, low phos wet foods.

Thanks I had found both earlier today!

I pretty much know a lot already from being here, and from a friend who did a lot of research on the subject for her cat.

I did find out today much to my surprise that the Fancy Feast Classics are very high in phosphorus! Will be finding new food asap!

Yeah I didn't realize FF classic was so high in phos either until fairly recently. I know several Weruva truluxe are low in phos. But if you can't find a low phos food you could go with a binder, too.

Luckily I have two very well stocked cat supply places near my home.  Both sell Weruva, which we used to feed them.  We stopped only because it seemed that Casper wasn't tolerating the texture of it but in retrospect the barfing up from it may well have been a) his diabetes - he was so hungry all the time he'd scarf too fast and b) perhaps just being nauseous in general.  I'm going to try them again for sure and look for other brands which are low in it also.  Of course, my vet recommended a prescription diet which I say no to.  Great vet practice buy they all still push the Hills

Vomiting is common with CKD, too. Sigh. I wish more vets would be on board with high protein low phos wet foods over those garbage RX foods. Good luck, sounds like you're on the right track

The Wellness Core Beef, Venison and Lamb was a big hit with my Sandra
.  It's lower in phosphorus.  Hugs to your baby.

thank you so much for the recommendations. He loves venison and lamb so that would be perfect.

I used to feed my cats Weruva too until they started puking it up (about 18-24 mos ago)  I truly thought it might be from too much Tuna.  I think it can be a bit toxic if you eat it all of the time as tuna can be high in mercury...that is just a thought I had, no scientific evidence to back that up.  The puking stopped when I rotated them off of the Weruva.

Hope your Casper is doing well...I'm getting my guys CBC in the next week as they are going to be 18 in October...one has been loosing weight lately and I'm not happy about that.  Had CBCs done this past October and things were fine just 4.5 months ago...fingers crossed it's just the weather...

Not all the Weruva varieties have fish, in fact they have several that don't.

Correct. There are move than several flavors of Weruva's that do not have any seafood in them at all.
