My pet cat, Prism, had kittens less than 24 hours as I'm writing this post.

The kittens seem healthy, and are doing the normal kitten things (such as suckling and squirming around to sleep with their mum).

Problem is, though she is stimulating them, and they are peeing and pooping, she isn't cleaning them unless you hold a baby up to her face.

Is this normal, if not, what can i do to make sure they should be cleaned?  If they aren't clean, can they be hurt?

I'm not sure if shes just cleaning them when were not looking (and just doing a bad job) or not, they just seem dirty, as they have yellow/brown wet patches all over their lower bodies, and smell.

Thank you for any advice!

The usual is moms clean them in total.  The owner rarely notices anything.

Lets hope her instincts click in in full.  Otherwise you must help them, taking off the worst.  Use some soft tissue.  first the worst, after a a slightly damp tissue to take off the rest.   Also change the bedding more often than otherwise. Perhaps even every day.

We had a similiar tread not long ago.

As long as she is stimulating them, that is good! I would take StefanZ's advise and clean them yourself when they need it, Hopefully her instincts are just slow. I don't understand how they are getting soiled if she is stimulating them, watch closely and see if she actually doing a good job at that, she should be leaving nothing behind if she is doing it correctly. You may have to try to stimulate a couple yourself and see if hey are full or not. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thank you!
One tip more.  If necessary, you may do the stimulating yourself, so they poo in a controlled fashion.  If it makes the cleaning easier, I mean.   :)

In the other tread the momma wasnt washing them at all, so it got totally out of control, and thus, there it was necessary to preempt them.

A friend of mine suggested putting 100% lavender oil on my mother cat, and dilute it and put it on her newborns as well to keep off fleas.

I have done so, and already am seeing fleas "flee"

Only worry is that mama cat might not be able to smell her babies properly and then abandon them, as she is already leaving the nest to do other things.

When I put her back in, and her kittens are crying she sniffs them, but doesnt lay down with them as she usually does.

Seem okay?

The friend happens to be a cat and dog breeder and she says she does it to all her kittens and mothers as it is non-toxic

I would do some more research on the safety of lavender oil and cats. As far as I new it was toxic.
Just had another look, its a 100% oil, so it should be okay. As I know the person who bottled it only uses the oils, and not anything else to bring down the price.

According to the ASPCA, it's toxic, and that includes the oil:

http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/lavender

The oil is also listed as toxic to cats on this list:
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/essential-knowledge-for-cat-ow-58072

That was just a quick search, so it's certainly listed elsewhere.
my local cat breeders and vet says its okay in small doses, and that they've been using it for years.

Other sites say that pure oils are okay.

I would really recommend trusting the ASPCA. I know people use lavender sent to clam their cats, but that's different than using a pure oil. It's dangerous.

I recommend that you err on the side of caution and not use lavendar oil, especially since it seems to be turning off her kittens.

Are you weighing the kittens every day? Do you have supplies to supplement?

And how bad is the flea infestation? Mom needs treatment with advantage II and they all need to be combed daily.
