I have a 7-year old tabby that tends to kick as much little as possible out of the box.  This is not a new thing but seems to be getting worse over time.

Some background:

She's a rescue

She lost an eye before we got her due, we believe, to an infection

She sometimes even scratches the wall behind the box leading us to believe it's almost a compulsion.

This is not a huge deal.  We just sweep it up when done but it is odd and if there's something we can do to limit it it would help us out.

Welcome to TCS Tabby Dad. I do not know why some cats are messier than others. All I've been able to come up in past experience is better containment such as higher box sides, larger box and a big catch tray. I'm sure someone here has better advice.

I went to the container store and got a VERY tall plastic container and filled it up with A LOT of litter.  It's the easiest thing in the world to scoop because I just lean it back and forth and then side to side and the clumps and solid waste come straight to the top.  I thought at first that my cats might not like having to jump in but they're fine with it.  And the high sides keep the litter in the container no matter how much they dig.  This is one of the smartest things I ever did.

Thanks. We're using the larger (6.5 to 7 inch) disposable boxes. I may be putting too much litter in but the fact that she also tries to scratch the wall behind the box suggests to me something else.

My wife insists that she cannot see what she's scratching because of the missing eye and therefore continues to scratch well beyond what's necessary.

Who knows???

She's a nut case but she's our nut case and a joy to have around. Even taught her to play fetch a while back.

The main purpose of the post was to see if anyone else had had the same issues.
