Hello, all! As to be expected with a multi-cat household, the ocassional poop crisis is to be expected. Luckily, we're not experiencing anything major at the moment, although Sorrel has had a few half-formed stools lately (solid, well-formed pieces followed by a cow patty). Ocassionally, she also has some rather large (but well-formed, not dry) stools, such as one she passed yesterday. Some of these irregularities I believe are caused by the hairball treats I feed them sometimes, which can have a laxative effect, but other than that I haven't fed anything questionable or witnessed any of them eating foreign objects. Because I am a paranoid cat parent, I am constantly checking the litter box and freaking myself out over my findings. In Sorrel's case, I was wondering if feline megacolon often presents these types of symptoms. She's not experiencing constipation; her stools are not abnormally dry or hard, and sizeable stools aren't completely unexpected for a cat her size. She is normal in all other aspects and seems as passionate as ever about her food. If megacolon is typically associated with chronic constipation, I'm doubting that's what she is experiencing. However, if anyone has experience with this condition and knows what to watch for, your input is highly welcome and appreciated.

Furthermore, to encourage regularity across the board, I wanted to know if anyone has had success in using a probiotic like Fortiflora in a multi-cat household and what differences you've noticed after using it. I'm considering it especially for our senior cat, Stewie, to kep things regular and ensure he's getting enough nutrients out of his diet.

From what I know of megacolon, it is normally followed after many bouts of constipation, sometimes years of it.  This doesn't sounds like Sorrel's issue.  If you think her digestive issues are brought on by those hairball treats, then I would stop them, or switch to something else (maybe use Egg Yolk Lecithin daily) and see what happens.

As to Fortiflora, I use it on occasion, when one of my guys as a bout of diarrhea, and for THAT, it does seem to help.  Almost immediately.  But for anything else, like a daily probiotic, or keeping a cat regular, I would turn to something else.  We had senior cats who had chronic constipation due to kidney disease, and for that we used Miralax on the advise of our Vet.

To ensure Stewie is gettng all his nutrients, you might try using digestive enzymes.  We use Prozyme around here.
