I've never had this happen before.

Today, DH told me, "It looks like someone was hauling a garden statue up our street, and it fell off the truck." Well, the "statue" looked familiar to me--it was the post for our bird bath.  It's nothing valuable, and it was old, but what really bothers me is that someone came right up against the front of our house, under our bedroom window--and we didn't even hear them (they carried it a long distance from the yard, down the street, and smashed it to bits).

We called the police, who said that they had several reports of vandalism last night in our area. I did drive around some of the streets before you get to ours in our development, but saw nothing damaged; in fact, a lot of houses had Christmas decorations on their lawns intact. I'm wondering if our house was targeted for some reason; we're toward the center of the longest street in a huge development of 500 houses, and I could understand them randomly vandalizing at the entrance of the street, or the bottom of it. I looked down the street, but saw nothing, though DH said that earlier, he saw some stuff that may or may not have been touched, he couldn't really tell.

Ooh, what an awful feeling.  It's bad enough that the birdbath was destroyed, but you must feel targetted as well.  That makes you feel so vulnerable.
I've been robbed before so have some idea of what this feels like.

Just a word of comfort:  It was probably not you that was targeted, but the birdbath.  For whatever reason, it appealed to the vandals. I'm really sorry it was destroyed, though.  This kind of thing really does hurt.

Vandals are usually kids who haven't really thought through what they're doing.  I know this does not make the loss easier to bear but at least it means that someone is rarely attacking you personally.  That was our big worry when we were robbed - that we had been targetted and they might come back.  These things  are always such a blow to our sense of security and sense of right and wrong.

Anyway, you have my sympathy.  This kind of thing is terribly unnerving.  I hope the culprits are identified at some point.

I am glad they didn't get inside your house and vandalize there. I have never had that happen and think it would be a terrible feeling to know someone came on your property and damaged your belongings.

Sorry, I didn't realize it was your house!

But seriously, I have to confess to being on the other side of this at one point in my life when I was a teenager getting drunk with my friends. It sounds like it was kids, and hopefully that's all it was. Stupid kids doing stupid things. I know that doesn't help bring your bird bath, but hopefully it just means kids were being stupid and nothing more serious than that. Sorry to hear it happened to you though.

I am so sorry. Something like that tears away your security and it takes a long time for you to get over it. It's not easy. I hope they can find out who did it. As to the why.....well, kids are stupid and they have no reason, other than, "Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time....."

I hope they can figure it out.

The sense of invasion and loss of security is profound when something like this happens, I remember when when our house was broken into many years ago and the sense of breach was so strong for so long. Just to know a stranger invaded our 'space' and took something that belonged to us is unsettling. I would bet it was kids too, or someone who took a liking to your birdbath and didn't want to pay fro one. It was most likely loaded too hastily and fell out. Unless someone in the neighborhood saw something, it will most likely be a mystery.  I'm so sorry for you, I hope the people who did this are caught and convicted when they try this again, they will somewhere. Good luck, here's to security cameras and big dogs!

You might consider buying a trail camera from Wal Mart. You can attach it somewhere at the front of your house and get their picture if anything were to happen again.
