Hi @leen and alice.

I would strongly urge you to get your Alice spayed.
  • The problem with unspayed females is not only the multitude of kittens they can have, but also they are very uncomfortable while in heat...yowling, howling, writhing, and wanting to do anything to escape and find a mate. Then they can get injured, killed, or lost, while escaping to find that mate.
  • There is also an infection called 'pyometra' that can develop in an unspayed female cat, which can prove fatal.
              http://www.petmd.com/cat/conditions/reproductive/signs-pyometra-cats

                http://www.vcahospitals.com/main/pet-health-information/article/animal-health/pyometra-in-cats/330

Spaying a female cat while young, is far more easier on her, then waiting when older.

And I don't think your mom would want Alice to be uncomfortable, or die later on from a possible infection.

As far as your dad's friend, and your dad's thinking,...Spaying reduces the urges to mate, to escape, to roam, because the cat no longer has the ovaries to produce the hormones to drive them to mate.

If it's a problem of money...then there are many low-cost clinics, that do spay and neuter procedures daily.

If your mom, is very worried about Alice's death, then the low-cost clinics may not offer the pre-blood work, to make sure a cat is healthy, and offer extras like IV fluids, and overnight stays,...but those things cost extra.

(I took 2 of my kittens, a boy and girl, to a low-cost clinic, and the female was given pain meds for her spay, and came home the same day.

Age 5.5 months, and they acted like their usual kitten selves the same day.)

Please get her spayed.

There are too many unwanted kittens, out there, who are euthanized every day.

No problem, @leen and alice.

And if you need help finding a low-cost clinic, you can mention the general area you live in, or PM me.

I'm in Canada, but there are members that can find places in the States, too.

Not to mention, you can Google... 'low-cost spay and neuter clinics' in your area, humane societies, and some animal control places offer the spay/neuter service... and get more information.

Even calling more than one Vet is a good idea, since the prices seem to vary from place to place, and what they offer, during the spay procedure.

Oh, and mention to your father, that the male tom cats, who are not neutered....may also pick up the scent of a female unspayed cat, and come calling, yowling, and crying all night for her to come out.

They are known to break screen windows, too. Very persistent.

The un-neutered cats also like to fight over females and territory.

They get injured, and have vicious fights...with abscesses, and blood. It's not a good thing to have male cats who are not neutered spraying in your yard, or near your female.

Also this Cat Site article might help:

Hi. I had both my females spayed at six months. I took them to the vets at 9am and collected them at 5pm the same day. Both were absolutely fine. Wanted food as soon as they got home and also wanted to play, although I had to try to keep them quiet for a few days. By the following day they were both back to normal and acting as if nothing had happened.
Please talk to your parents, it is a routine operation nowadays. Go to your vets and ask for some literature or go on line. Show it to your parents for them to realise the importance of spaying. Let us know how you get on.

Just wanted to add an example; I spayed my kitten at 7ish months but my friend who took her sister did not.

That poor kitten went thru heat several times a year and it drove my friend mad. The constant yeowling, the loss of appetite, and the struggle to keep her indoors was very real. There was also a few times a tomcat would come by. After a year and a half they got her spayed. No more problems (well she does yeowl a bit, but not for days, and each heat could last from a few days to two weeks!)

I had no such problems. My kitty was scared when I left her and hated me a few days but was perfectly healthy after the surgery.

Definitely look into low cost clinics if money is a concern. I can reccomend some in the Los Angeles area, but rescue groups near you may have a list.

Good luck!!

I fully agree with all of the advice you've received. She will no longer be interested in sex after the spay, which will make her much, much more comfortable. It's so important for her health, happiness, and safety - and yours too! Please urge your parents to reconsider. The vast majority of cats come through without complications.

You did the right thing in the interest of the cat.

Have a good care of her after the procedure, follow the vet advice an the treatment (if reccomanded by the vet).

You may find safe to keep the cat strictly indoor during the convalescence, to avoid any injury.

HI everyone!

so apparently the appointment is 2 weeks or so away

anyways while the time comes I just want to ask a few questions

are there typical foods to avoid after the surgery or during heat? Because today in the morning alice vomited a 1/4 banana ( everyday at 10 am Alice has to eat a snack, which is a peice of a banana) so is there something that has to do with it?

or just a coincidence .. And should I avoid giving her bananas??

thank you

You should not be giving her fruit.

Cats are not like dogs which will happily eat people food (even the ones that will give them problems!) I've never heard of a cat who eats bananas but in general cats won't eat fruit (especially citrus!) I would stop giving her bananas. If you really want to give her something, maybe a little bit of her wet food (or wet food if she's not eating it at all) or UNSWEETENED pumpkin (not pie filling, that's a no no no).

My cats will enjoy a few blades of grass or spinach. But then I have to be on the lookout for vomit, lol, so that was a weekly/bi-monthly thing, not daily. My aunt's cat liked olives- the spanish ones with the pit. He would eat the meat and then spit out the pit. Very cute but she only indulged him once in a while.

She may not want to eat for a while after the surgery, but if her appetite doesn't pick up the next day I would call the vet.

Cats are carnivores, they can't properly digest fruits or any plant material really. The only use cats really have for plant material is fiber to help them poop or puke, they getting very little to no nutritional benefits from it. For example when they eat grass it's generally to get extra fiber to get things moving through their system. Cats don't have taste buds that can even taste sweet, so things like a banana aren't going to taste like much, it's probably just the texture she likes. A better food option that would give the same texture of a banana would be wet food paté.

Just feed her normal cat food, but keep an eye on her weight, once a cat has been fixed they tend to not need as many calories. So how much you are feeding her a day may need to be adjusted not necessarily what you are feeding her (aside from stop feeding her bananas).

Bananas are like a "surviving kit". They do nothing. Just provide some calories. Nothing more.

They are cheap and tasty, they can be cooked - OK.

In humans, bananas are known to constipate,

Not even monkeys eat bananas.

As obligate carnivores, cats are not programmed to cathalbolise sugars. But this is an assumption, not a proven scientific fact, at least from what I know now.

Anyway, I see no reason in giving bananas to a cat.

You may try catnip. Still, my cat does not like catnip. Perhaps is a very conservative cat and dont like getting high.
