hi everyone,

wanted to get someone's opinion if they had any experience with this? My kitten is only 9 months old and just this week I noticed he was weirdly losing weight. I thought I was crazy but I can now feel his whole spine and shoulder blades very clearly and he has always been very filled out. just yesterday he started having pretty bad diarrhea and he is super gassy. he is drinking more water than he ever normally does and he always seems to hiccup his food back up when he eats...appetite and behavior is normal. I'm taking him to the vet Monday but wasnot sure if anyone had any ideas? super worried about him:(

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) typically causes weight gain; hyperthyroidism (overactive) causes weight loss and is more common in elderly cats. It's more likely that your kitten has some kind of internal parasite. It would be a good idea to take a stool sample with you to the vet's office for testing.

I think you mean hyperthyrodism, which as mentioned above has some of the symptoms you are describing. It would be extremely rare in a 9 month old kitten, most cats diagnosed with hyper-t are around 10, however there are cats as young as 5 diagnosed. But at 9 months he would have to have some kind of genetic medical issue to cause the hyper-t. Likely something else is causing this issues, but you'll need a workup at your vet to figure that out.

thanks for the responses. I definitely spelled it wrong, my fault! Took him to the vet today and the vet doesn't seemed concerned but put the idea in my head that it could be FIP? My cat doesn't have a fever and she didn't seem to think he had fluid in his belly. Any knowledge about FIP? Nor I'm over paranoid. She also said it could be a food allergy since I recently switched his food. Hoping that's it?

What food are you feeding?

He has always eaten blue buffalo and just last week I started giving him fancy feast as a treat because he loves it. he has eaten it for week, does it take about that time to notice affects of an allergy? I don't have any experience with cat allergies. I know fancy feast is low quality but he was fine for about a week, but the vet suspects that could still be it

A food allergy would, yes, so would something like IBD. Wet food is much easier for cats to digest and since you want him to put on weight weight food has more meat based protein, which is what cats need. FF classic is decent, but avoid any of the other ones with gravy because they're loaded with wheat gluten, which is a big allergy. If you can get to an independent pet store or a Petco there are better options there. Weruva, Tikicat, Merrick LID, Soulistic, Feline Naturals, Ziwipeak, all good foods. At this point I would try as many wet foods as possible to try and get him to eat more and see if that helps.

Eating less food or ongoing severe diarrhea does.

A diet change is hard on their system, which is why you should always make a slow transition, over a weeks time, so they don't get the gas and diarrhea.

However, I have to tell you, as I read your thread, the first thing that pops in to my head is fip.

9 month olds don't lose weight without a very good reason.

Keep an eye on him and watch for any signs or changes in appetite, behavior, lack of play/disinterest, fever, dehydration, growing tummy that feels squishy, more weight loss.

got a response from the vet today about his blood work, she said everything is where we would want to be except white blood cell count is slightly low. His diarreha has stopped, which is good. she said from what she sees in his blood there is definitely no indication of fip which is such a relief. Found out he got into a bag of cheetos and locked the cheese off so I'm thinking that may have been the issue? haha.
thanks for all the help I think he is going to be okay but will keep a close eye on him!
